Hey I have a question I was looking into buying a scanner not one too expensive and I saw two of them that I would be inrested in but I am not sure if they would work in NYC,Queens. My first question is did the NYPD go digital? If so would a WS1040 work?

NYPD is still analog, for the time being.

The WS-1040 is a P25 capable scanner, so it will work fine with most stuff in and around NYC, including most of the public safety trunked systems (NYC DoITT UHF, NYC DoITT 800 MHz, State of NY Metro-25, Port Authority EDACS, etc.)

It will not decode DMR (MotoTRBO), only P25.

Note that the new DoITT P25 trunked system is P25 Phase II (TDMA) capable, so the scanner may not decode all future talkgroups on that system. The new P25 system the Port Authority is building out is also Phase II, so the WS-1040 won't be able to decode those talkgroups either, assuming they are not encrypted.

Thank you for the response. I am new at this and you have been a big help, one more question how long do you think they keep it analog?

Would the BC125AT work?
The BC125AT will be fine for listening to analog conventional frequencies between 25-512 MHz. Almost all NYPD and FDNY channels are analog and in the 470-490 MHz range, so they will work with that scanner.

NYPD is going encrypted in the near future. All MOS are currently being issued Vertex Standard (Motorola) VX-P949 portables. All of the borough banks currently have unencrypted and encrypted channels. The encrypted channels are not in service as of yet. If I had to guess, the department will be encrypted within the year, with some frequencies unencrypted.
