Just bought a Uniden BCD436HP, New to this Hobby. Need Advise. When scanning picks up my local Lindenhurst, IL police signal, BUT just a continuos High Pitch beep is the only sound that comes out as the audio? First I updated the firmware,I tried changing Mod.,While I have the frequency on hold...still the same thing. My only guess is because I live in the town the signal is to strong or interference from a cell phone tower?, I've ordered a shorty antenna, thinking this might help the strong signal issue, if that's the problem.
Now it picks up neighboring police frequencies perfect, So I don't think it's a hardware problem but a user problem :) Any advise...anyone?

Are you hearing it on 458.4125 or a similar freq?

If so that is a receiver link for the old UHF system. The tone is called a Pilot Tone. When it is present all is well and no signals are being received. When there is proper audio the received signal is sent to the repeater for retransmission. If the tone goes away then the system knows the receiver is offline.

The only time you will hear anything other than the pilot tone is when that receiver picks up audio on 473.5875 (the repeater input).

The signal is part of the larger 470.5875 repeater system which has been largely replaced by StarCom21.

Thank You, Thank You very much for replying! Finally some answers!!!!

Ahhh What you wrote makes makes perfect sense and excellent education in the realm of radio frequencies.

little confused though-even on this sight has the frequencies for Lindenhurst, IL in Lake County is 458.41250 "remote link" and is part of the Antioch police dispatch system along with surrounding towns in the area, if I understand correctly it's the old UFH system, which is fine but confused the Newest Uniden firmware still has in it's recognizable system as my Uniden BCD436HP will pick it up(the continuous High Pitch)

So if I understand right my local Lindenhurst police are on StarCom 21—473.5875 ?

Or is Lindenhurst Police signal is only encrypted(talk groups) or in the process of moving their system over to StarCom and or currently they use CB's to communicate or cell phones..teasing :) :)

Again!!!!! Thanks so Much for the Insight and Time, It's been driving me absolutely crazy, especially with the Cost of the Uniden BCD436HP, PlEASE any more replies from you with any other insights would be GREATLY Appreciated!! Have a Good Day or Night whenever you see this

Lindenhurst used to use a repeater system on 470.5875 shared with several neighboring towns. That channels repeater input is 473.5875. They use several 453 and 458 freqs as remote receiver links, instead of renting hone lines or microwave systems. Every time I would drive on IL-132 thru tow I would hear that repeater link in town with the pilot tone.

While that system is apparently still in place, most operations has switched to StarCom21, a digital wide-area system on 700 and 800 MHz. If you have a digital scanner you can pick up some of the local traffic on it. According to the database one LPD channel is encrypted and another is not. I am too far away these days to verify it one way or another.

See https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=2324 for details
