The 2300 will work fine but as we all know you should not use the charger in the scanner, so keep an extra set for changing and an external charger for charging.

A higher capacity Mah rating will give you a longer run time. Those battery's should be fine... A lot of people like the Panasonic enolope batt's... And as stated... Not advisable to charge them in the scanner.

Check this out... And you will see why not to charge in the scanner...

Most of the radios do not have a controlled charging circuit for the battery's. It doesn't no when the battery's are charged to stop. The AC adapter can be used to run the radio from an ac outlet.

If i'm not mistaking you need both battery and ac plug in to update the scanner. That's a safety feature so you don't have a shut down while you are updating Power failure.

If the HP 1 has the ability to record, then I believe they need to be in. That would be like my 436...
The 436 will run from a power adapter without battery's but not record unless they are installed.

Lower ampacity (Mah) is not a problem...You just shorten the time that your scanner will run on the battery's that's all. The higher the ampacity the longer your scanner will run.

Are you talking about a battery charger capable of 2000ma?

The 436 ... That's what I have... Has a setting to set the amount of time in hours to charge the battery's. The problem is... 1-Your charging the battery's in a series connection... Not individually... 2-The scanner does not have the ability to know when the battery's are fully charged... So if the battery's are fully charged the scanner keeps hitting them with a charge current... It does not drop down to a trickle charge... So they can get very hot and possibly explode.

Your fine with that....Higher capacity batt will get you more runtime though... Try them and see how they work for you.

Look at the link Randy posted in post #3 of this thread for your answer....

But, aside from possibly running the risk of blowing up your scanner, a scanner uses a "dumb" charging method based on a timer. In other words it does sense or know when the batteries are full, it will continue to charge them for a set amount of time no matter what. This over time will cause over-charging or if you elect to go with a higer mAh type battery to prolong your run times, it can result in under-charging.

Either way, using the scanner to charge your batteries will eventually degrade them and you will find yourself having to buy AA NiMH battery packs often.

In sum, charging your batteries in a proper separate charger will keep your scanner safe, keep your batteries conditioned and will save you a lot of grief and money in the long run.

Just my 2 1/2 cents.

I believe you can, but your record and playback functions will become disabled. Also you run the risk if an abrupt or improper shutdown should occur, your SD card can get corrupted.

Randy, I have learned more about NiMH batteries and charging them then I would have ever wanted to know in the last few weeks....lol.

Glad I did though. Been using my Maha 9000 non stop since I got it. Works great!
