Hot Air Balloons & Ultra;ights are pretty common in Michigan. I'm thinking Hot Air Balloon pilots and possibly Ultralights pilots use a variety of radios for air to ground communications for the tracking crew. Is there any common ones they use or is what ever they can get their hands on. Do any of them actually use aircraft frequencies?

I don't know about ultralights, but balloons use pretty much whatever. They will use aircraft band to talk to the nearest airport tower, but as far as talking to their ground crew, some of the pilots have licensed business band frequencies (VHF & UHF), and a lot of them use MURS or FRS. I think that a lot of them have switched from licensed services to FRS in recent years due to cost. At least that's been my experience at the annual balloon event in Battle Creek.
