Acrid smoke billowed into the warm spring air Monday afternoon, as the Laramie Fire Department successfully battled to save a home at 1620 Kearney St.
The Fire Department received the call at about 2 p.m., a time when many local youth would have been preparing to leave nearby Beitel Elementary School if they hadn’t been out for their Easter and spring breaks. Those students were set to return to school this morning.
According to information provided by the Laramie Fire Department, the agency responded with 10 firefighters and three fire officers. Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene, along with a ladder truck, an ambulance and command vehicles. In addition, the Laramie Police Department responded to the scene.
When the fire crews arrived on the scene, the smoke appeared to be pouring from every crack and opening in the building. Fire Department officials said the garage on the east side of the building was fully ablaze.
The first engine company on the scene entered the building and attacked the flames from an interior doorway, which led to the garage, company officer Russ Matheson said.
Within 10 minutes, the blaze had been knocked down, Matheson said.
While the local fire crews sprayed and chopped and battled the dancing flames, passersby and neighbors were gathering on the block behind the house along Sheridan Street. Unlike Kearney Street, Sheridan was not blocked by police cruisers or fire trucks, and it offered a nearly full view of the event.
Nearby residents expressed shock and sorrow over the event, but they were also grateful that it wasn’t their house ablaze. No one seemed to know whether anybody had been injured in the fire.
The building contained a main floor apartment and a basement apartment. According to the fire department, all of the occupants were located, safe and sound. The firefighters union, Local 946, has presented funds to the tenants to assist with immediate housing needs.
With the main blaze out, the Fire Department still had some mopping up to do. Even small embers, left undiscovered and glowing, can spring back to life. According to Matheson, the crews had to check for hidden fires behind or inside of walls or in the attic.
The fire was considered completely extinguished at 3 p.m.
Matheson said the cause of the fire was still under investigation as of Monday evening.
The structure fire was one of many calls that kept the Fire Department busy on Monday.
