Icom: How is the IC-705 on the air-bands/aircraft?

How is performance on the air bands with ICOM's IC-705? Does it cover the full VHF and UHF air bands? Does it transmit on the air bands?

Out of the box it does not transmit on anything other than ham bands. Try a search for the MARS/CAP mod, it does exist for this radio. I have no idea what it opens up for transmit.

I'm think @bearcatrp might have bought one, and then sold it. We'll see if he chimes in with additional info.

Only civilian air band. No mil air coverage. 200 to 399 MHz gone. A shame Icom neutered it. Would have kept mine if it covered mil air. It is a great radio, no doubt.

It was good on VHF. The waterfall display really helps.

I’m a little confused, while it’s a really nice HF to UHF all mode QRP rig, it doesn’t fit the needs of an air band enthusiast.

It didn’t fit my needs since no mil air. If all you want is civilian air, it would work.
