Quick simple answer is one ladder truck and one engine for a light force. LAFD does not use "Quints" which are an engine/ladder combination. So the ladder needs and engine to accompany it. That engine is not fully staffed, it just has two firefighters, while the truck has 4 firefighters for a total force of 6. The ladder's engine and the ladder truck always respond together, separating the two is very rare. A single engine is added to form a task force. That single engine can be dispatched alone. This leaves the station with a light force to respond to additional calls. The task force then has 10 firefighters, two of which are captains. The task force leader is a Captain II while the single engine has a Captain I.

I grew up in Station 5's first in district. Station 5 has a task force, which consists of Engine 5, Truck 5 and it's accompanying engine, Engine 205. This station also has Rescue Ambulance 5. Urban Search and Rescue 5 is also at that station. The engine accompanying the ladder is always numbered in the 200 series, except for stations numbered past 100 where those would be, for example, Engine 301 responding with Ladder 101.

So as I travel around the city on the freeways I see groups of one engine and a truck moving all over the freeways is a typical for LA City to move light forces all around

Yes, the light force will stay together all the time. If there are move ups, it moves together.

Sometimes they move light forces to cover other stations. Sometimes that move up might be a Code 3 response and sometimes not. Sometimes they move rescue ambulances and sometimes single engines. This happens when a battalion gets stripped due to a large incident. The typical phrase in most departments is "move up and cover."

A task force, say for a mutual aid brush response, 5 engines

A strike team is 5 like resources (i.e. 5 type 1 engines) and a leader. It can vary based on equipment. Dozers and handcrews only need 2 each to be considered a strike team.

A task force is up to 5 unlike resources. Like LAFD task force 2 engines and a truck or 3 engines and a water tender or 2 type 1 engines and 2 type 3 engines or 1 engine and a dozer etc.
