Lets just say that there was a call sign coming up in a year, one that I
really hoped I could get..... what in your opinions would be the best way
to go about trying to see if other hams interested in the sign would yield
it to me? Obviously they have zero obligation to do so and under FCC
rules have every right to the call and the right to all file on the same day
and have it goto the lottery style picking but I'm asking how you would
go about saying essentially "hey, this call sign is very important to me, if
you really want it please contact me and we'll see if there's anything I
could do to change your mind, compensate your efforts, or explain my
hopes for it" etc..... It may sound naive and stupid but I'm hoping you
guys could chime in.

I think the fundamental flaw in what you want is the fact that there is no one single venue that all hams pay attention to. There's no sure fire way to get the word out to every ham interested in a vanity call sign. Never mind what sort of cooperation you might get, not everyone out there is going to know how important it is to you.

Better to keep quiet about the call you want, in case you wake up someone who thinks 'hey, that's a great call, I'll ask the FCC for that'.

Just like when we wuz kids - first up is the best dressed! :D

You might wish to read the FCC rules and procedures for obtaining vanity callsigns. If I recall correctly they have everything spelled out in some detail about obtaining another person's callsign after the person dies or forfeits the callsign. I don't think that a callsign holder can "assign" it to someone else unless there is some direct family involvement, but again, read the rules and you'll know for sure how things work.

As suggested above, I would just stay quiet with the call sign you want. I waited a year for the call sign I wanted with my initials in it. A school ham radio club had it, it expired, I filed the request with the FCC the day it expired and I got it.

Thanks, for the tips. I love vanity HQ. I'm not big on the initials game so we'll just see if the one I'm looking at (a weird call) will end up mine or not. I guess its up to chance at this point!
