Hoping someone can offer some suggestions. I will be out in the area in early June and wanted to see what would be the best to program into my SDS100 to hear PD/Fire etc. I will be staying in various areas including W. Covina and other nearby areas. Was thinking of doing the "zip code" scan but figured that area would have WAY too much to "avoid" What systems should I be focusing on? Any and all tips and suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

The Los Angeles area is an area the GPS part if the scanner can come into play. There is still much to listen to, you will need a laptop with a direct connection to Radio Reference as you will be changing programming list every few minutes if you are driving.
Get a good map of the area and program in as many favorite lists as you can of the areas you are going to be in before leaving. There will be alot programming involved with the trunking systems for the various sites used.

Also add Los Angeles County Sheriff (don't bother with dispatch channels), A-Tac, L-Tac, SUD according to your geographic area. LAPD (also not the dispatch channels) Tac channels and Metro SWAT.

Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino NF. Misc. air VHF/UHF freqs according to your area and interests.

As mentioned earlier, W. Covina PD is encrypted on the ICI System, but fire isn't, so I'd add that to the load.

Depending on where you are in LA and what is happening one scanner is not enough sometimes. That is from someone who just scans fire. I will run one just for LACoFD and LAFD and another just for Verdugo which is on the ICI system and if near San Bernardino County will be going too. It can be really easy to overload in LA.
