Hi,

I have a large P25 system programmed into my SDS100. It’s the Virginia Statewide Agencies (STARS).

There are 61 different sites around the state. In my location I only use 1 or 2 of them. I have assigned all the sites Quick Keys using the sentinel software. How do I turn the sites on and off on the scanners itself?

Thanks!

Type the fav list number then decimal point, then system number, then decimal point, then site number then enter.

I type 50.10.21 to toggle site 21 in a system I have in fav list 50, system 10 and site 21. The quick key assigned to sites is the same as departments..

Make a list of the quick keys you made for future reference so you can enable and disable them when required. All you have to do enter the quick key # on the keypad of the scanner itself and you can either press the E/yes button OR you can press once on the squelch/volume button to confirm your site quick key,and then it will show site XX ON or OFF. Hope this helps.

If you have location control ON and the locations are correct in the scanner it will only scan towers within the ranges that are set. (Both range on scanner and range set for the towers themselves) For example if range on scanner is Zero and a tower 20 miles away has it's range set to 30 the scanner will scan it. No need to manually turn towers on and off.

Both solutions are correct. Location Control is the best method assuming a GPS device is connected and can "see" the satellites (or you don't mind changing location via keypad as you go about).

There are some occasions where "fine tuning" of sites that are on/off may be needed. For example I could be monitoring the Minnesota statewide system and be in Minneapolis. Even with a 0 Range I could have multiple sites on (Hennepin County, Minneapolis City, Minneapolis state, Ramsey County). I might only be interested in traffic coming off the Minneapolis City site, so I'd have to manually turn off the remainder.

Thanks for the information. Wouldn’t 21 in “50.10.21” be the department instead of the site?

If you have a dept numbered 21, yes, but on this system , it has only 14 depts so I numbered the two sites 20 & 21. Sorry for any confusion. Systems here by my are not as crazy as say the viper system and some of the large statewide systems. Once you have everything memorized it's a breeze.

You can also have more than one thing turn on and off with a quick key. I have my county fire (800MHz) and the counties UHf conventional system sharing a system quick key. When I do 50.01 E, that turns on a Motorola type 2 system, (with only fd talkgroups) and a conventional system with the local fire freqs.

When I do 50.09 E, that turns on a Motorola type 2 system, (with only state pd talkgroups) a P25 system (with only state pd talkgroups) and a system with just state pd conventional freqs.

One thing with large systems is they may have many depts that exceed the number of dept quick keys. One thing that can be done if you run out of dept quick keys is to delete any depts that don't interest you, and not put the scanner in id search mode. I wanted just the fd talk groups so when I downloaded the system, and added to favorite list, I went and deleted everything I did not want. Works good for me..
