I have a HP-1 on order, It isn't here yet. I'm attempting to plan ahead. The HP-1 is mainly going to be used in the truck. I already have a GeoSat 6 GPS and a Kenwood D710A setup for APRS. Has anyone used this GPS and split to feed multiple radios? I'd like to use the single GeoSat GPS to feed the HP-1 and Kenwood radio. I also have a Delorme puck style GPS, but would like to not add another GPS to the truck just to run a scanner.

I had an AvMap G6 APRS that I used few times with my TM-D710. I eventually sold the G6, though. AvMap sticks it to you for map updates and loading the updates takes an inordinately long time. I also didn't care for the user interface. AvMap could learn a few things from Garmin. With a Garmin nuvi GPS receiver and an Argent Data GTRANS adapter, you get almost the same functionality as the AvMap G6 for a lot less money.

As for splitting the GPS signal, that's easy. Just build a splitter for the GPS-to-radio signal line. Most GPS receivers can drive two different destination devices. In my vehicle, I have a puck-type GPS receiver that drives both my TM-D710 and a RS-232 to USB adapter so I can get GPS data into a computer.

Does the Argent cable work with current generation Garmins? From reading the description, it appears to only work with older, discontinued Garmin products.

No, it works with the ones listed below. I simply bought a used Garmin Nuvi 350 on eBay, the Argent Data cable, and I was good to go. I love having one GPS do double duty!

I'm using a Garmin nuvi 1450 with an Argent GTRANS2 cable to connect to my TM-D710. It works OK, but you sometimes have to refresh the map to see the received APRS beacons.

Does anyone have a simple wire diagram for the GPS feed wire split? I'm using a Nuvi 350 with a Kenwood TM-D700. It would be nice to run the HP off the single GPS. I have the Argent cable. Thanks!

I'm following this thread with interest. I have the HP-1/Argent DPS combo that I use in the XYL's car. In my Jeep, I have the Kenwood TM-D700 w/Garmin GPS18 puck for APRS, and the Nuvi 390 for navigation. I'd really like to be able to use one of those with the HP-1 for the infrequent times I might have the HP-1 on board. What would be the simplest route?

I can draw everything except the HP-1 end of the splitter. What are the pin-outs?

This is pretty simple. I snatched the Kenwood GPS cable wiring diagram from the Kenwood manual and added the HP-1 GPS plug diagram that Mancow provided.

Note that the GPS cable Kenwood provides with the TM-D700 and TM-D710 can be a bear to solder to. Argent Data has a cable that's easier to work with and it has a right angle connector which may be easier to deal with in a mobile installation.

All that's needed from that point (for me at least) is a way to know which wire in the HP1 (/396/996/etc) GPS cable corresponds to those pins, and it's "game on".

I have a GreenLightLabs GPS-710, which fits in between the TM-D710A control head and the radio, inline on the RJ45 cable. Its GPS signal is passed to the TM-D710A control head via a small 2.5mm cable, and on the opposide side of the GPS widget is another 2.5mm output which could go to my HP, freeing up a 12V socket in my car and reducing cable clutter.

I picked up a Garmin 350 on eBay for $35 with all the original accessories.

I think you will like it. I am sure that you already know this, but once it arrives register it with Garmin, do the firmware updates, and consider springing for LifeTime maps. Also, 8 GB micro SD cards are cheap. You will need the SD adapter, but that is not a big deal, of course. I was pleasantly surprised when I bought mine used a year ago. It had never been connected to a computer, so when I registered with Garmin I was eligible for a new map! Oh, and they told me it had a one year warranty. I mentioned that I bought it used, but they said since it had never been registered that they covered it for one year!

Wow... I thought I had reply email notifications on. I guess not. Thanks for all the info. I plan on using this information to wire up a cable, hopefully later tonight. I must admit that I did like my Garmin Nuvi GPS I had before better than my AvMap. I think the Garmin was much better for searching businesses and addresses than the AvMap. I now find myself using my smartphone more often to "Google" places then place them in my AvMap.

Thank for the help guys! I now have the GPS running on the HP-1. The only snag I ran into was setting the baud rate. I set the rate to 9600 and it truned right on.
