• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was led to believe that a model 2 (limitted keypad) just needs a 3 housing and a DTMF pad to be converted to a model 3 (full keypad). Is this true?

That is correct... change the housing and keypad assembly and make the change from Regular to Numeric Keypad in CPS. Easy as that.

So it's do-able!

Now then, what is the advantage of having the full keypad on the HT 1250? You can't do FPP, I don't have a telephone connect to use it to dial out like a phone. So, the only thing I can think of is to assign a number on the pad to a function that would normally require me to scroll through menus to access. Is this right or no?

EMS in many parts of the country is still using DTMF on public safety frequencies to access hospitals (the old HEAR system.)

DTMF is commonly used in commercial applications to control all kinds of devices.

Hams use DTMF to signal repeaters to do various things like frequency and pl changes.

I used my Full Keypad for DTMF. If you don't need DTMF I wouldn't spend the money or take the time to upgrade to a full keypad.

Back when they were making the camouflage cases I had upgraded a set of HT1250's in Low Band, VHF, and UHF to camouflage. Neat radios.

Fwiw unless you require DTMF , do yourself a favor and don't bother recasing the unit.

You cannot do FPP with the HT 1250. The only HT capable of doing FPP is the 1550. The radio must have a multi-line display to accommodate FPP. Also, before you go and blow the rest of your money on a 1550, you will also need a "Red" battery for your 1550, or FPP will not work.

The dirty deed is done! I will be using the DTMF pad for Ham repeater purposes! I was on the fence about doing it until a good professional aquaintance of mine made me a deal on a rare baby blue version 3 original Moto refurb kit case that I could not pass up. Thank you ALL for your responses and advise.

Wow... Very interesting, I have to say.

I think the new APX series offers colors like that, but I doubt they are common. Looks like you did a nice job, though!

Thanks! There is a funny story behind this actually. I went to a Hamfest this past Sunday. A very nice guy, who is a Motorola guru and actually works at a pro shop, had an exact one like this on his person. I looked at it and instantly fell in love with it. Unfortunately, Moto-USA will NOT sell these blue cases. They come from Canada and you have to have connections up there to get one. Ebay has a few Chinese knock offs but no legit ones can be had from a certified US dealer. So, this guy goes to his vehicle and makes the mistake of showing me one in kit form, brand new that he still had. Wrong thing to do! I was NOT going to leave there without it. LOL..He gave me a good price, and I shelled out the bucks no problem....He wasn't looking to sell it, but I think he saw how much I liked it! Really cool guy!
So, now I'm a happy camper! :)

How to make a HT1250 to a HT1250+LS

There is a way to make a HT1250 to a HT1250+LS. It would require the optional board and EPROM upgrade. It is best to find a a HT1250+LS or a HT1550+LS on ebay. It would require you to open the radio. I thought about doing that to my HT1250, but it would be a pain to do that all the time. I find the Baofeng UV-5R works just as good, if not more impressive than my HT1250.
