• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was having quite a few difficulties using the Motorola supplied RIB box communicating through a serial USB adapter. I've had success with this set up once... just once. I confirmed the proper Port was being used. I also changed the port both through the computer and the CPS to ensure there wasn't a communication issue with any of the ports. I downloaded Prolific driver PL2303 and still no success. I attempted on 3 different HT1250s. I purchased a Kawamall USB cord through the recommendation of a thread through Radio Reference. I've cleaned contact points, ensured proper connections, and ensured no bent prongs. Still no success.

What am I doing wrong... or what did I do right once?

In a very recent post (8/29/15), I listed a sequence of things to do to get your radio to read properly, and of course to write properly. The conversation was about an HT750 which is in the same family of radios as the HT1250. It uses the exact same software and cabling. The OP there was having the same problem you are and found that my instructions worked.

Since that post is just barely a week old, I suggest you find that thread and read it over. It may solve your problem.

Search tags: The Professional or Waris
Series of radios includes:

HT750 HT1250 HT1550
EX500 EX600 EX560 EX650 PR860
CDM750 CDM1250 CDM1550
HT1250LS+ CDM1550LS+ CDM1550LS

It may be helpful to search using wildcards.
If someone asks a question about one model,
the answer usually pertains to most, if not all.
They are all programmed with HVN9025 CPS.

Double confirm you are following this exact set of instructions Cables & Drivers - Prolific & FTDI
Confirm once again that you are using 3.2.0.0 in your device manager properties
Make sure you are selecting file, then read so you get a com port option
Make sure the radio is on!
If all of the above still does not work, drop the baud rate to 1200
I have never had a problem after following all of the above steps even with a $9.00 cable

All of the above solutions may work...for awhile.

I had the same problem(s) with a couple of CDMs: they were being programmed properly for years then, one day, I got the dreaded "can't to open port" dialogue, and it was downhill after that.

I must have spent about a month or more trying everything from changing USB cables, buying a aftermarket RIB, buying another, different cable, even buying another used laptop with a different OS and serial port, but none of it worked.

Finally, I read on one of the forums, either here or somewhere else, that the only "solution" was to get a Motorola OEM programming cable to be used on a serial port ONLY....no serial-to-USB converters etc., like this one:

Motorola Ribless Programming Flash Cable AARKN4081B CDM GM MCX Pro New | eBay

THAT worked.

A little pricey maybe, but consider how much money I had spent on the the other cables and replacement laptop.

Since then, no more "can't open port" boxes are showing up and radios are programmed properly.

I have NOT had those problems with the EX600 portables I have, as I still use the USB cable for those.

Good luck.
