I have been in search mode covering 162 mhz - 174 mhz and the only usfs comms i received at all were on

164.1250 mhz/156.7 El Dorado N.F. Service Net (Still Active)
164.1875 mhz/Input Humboldt-Toiyabe N.F. Forest Net (Bridgeport District)
168.1750 mhz/094.8 hz Tahoe N.F. Fire Net
169.9000 mhz/094.8 hz Tahoe N.F. Admin Net
169.8750 mhz/CSQ hz Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest Net
170.4750 mhz/Input Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest Net
170.5500 mhz/156.7 hz Plumas N.F. Forest Net

all day on October 31 2017.
The traffic was routine weather and radio checks on HTNF frequencies.
171.3875 mhz doesnt ring a bell with me what is, or was this frequency?
Im monitoring close the 169.9750 mhz and 171.4250 mhz freqs also since leviathan pk frequency is non-operational currently.

I got some odd car/car traffic that was very local but brief comms regarding directions to a location nearby and im guessing it may had been the radio techs going to sierra front dispatch (minden) 166.9500 mhz/CSQ analog, this frequency has never heard any comms on it in the 20 + years at my location.

171.3875 is an old Stanislaus NF Input. I figured that I’d venture a guess, being that 170.525 was originally
allocated to the Inyo NF, at least in theory, I believe, and now is being used for the Humboldt-Toiyabe, Bridgeport RD. 171.3875 also used to be an input for the Modoc NF.

Maybe also try 170.575. I’ve noticed that in other situations, they have taken old inputs from adjacent Forests and used them as outputs for other forests. I don’t know if that is the case in this situation, only conjecture. That’s why I mentioned the other Frequencies.

Back to 169.875 for an Output. For example, fairly recently the Salmon-Challis National Forest South Net
was changed from 169.875 to 169.925.

I wiil continue to search federal vhf highband however the weather has begun to change and i assume that mtn top work will be discontinued till next year.

There were many simplex comms on the repeater input range during the ray may fire and i have that list but i dont know who they were they may had been more hotshot crews on there own tac channels .

Air/Ground freqs i wont ask there are so many and seem to change often.

I’m not sure exactly what will change. It seems like there are quite a few exceptions to the rules of the
new NTIA guidelines. You may be correct about the weather change. If there is to be any additional Frequency changes, they may not be until Spring.

I noticed a lot of database info needs updating as i look at recently for other areas.
I didnt look at wiki pages that info that i have seen seems more detailed and up to date so far.

Not sure exactly. All I really know is that one of their nets was changed from 169.875 fairly recently. The
Humboldt-Toiyabe is the only National Forest in the West, at least, that is still using 169.875, that I am aware
of. 169.875 used to be in use in Forest Service Regions 2,3,4,5 and 6, and has either been already phased out in the frequency conversion, or is in the process of being phased out. That is why I am questioning whether or not they will continue using 169.875 as an Output on the Humboldt-Toiyabe.

Even though technically, 169.875 meets the new NTIA standard to be an Output, it is in the range; it just
seems like the Forest Service is phasing it out. At least for Main Net Outputs in the West?

I suppose we will know the status on new freqs soon and i can look right out my window directly

Forest Service proposes Jobs Peak transmitter
December 22, 2017

Climbing Jobs Peak is a rite of passage for Carson Valley residents. If a U.S. Forest Service proposal is approved, those who've summited will also get to visit a new transmitter.
The Forest Service is conducting an environmental analysis to erect a radio repeater on the landmark peak to improve radio communciations.
According to a Dec. 7 letter to stakeholders, the repeater, shelter, solar panels and a 20-foot antenna would be helicoptered to the top of the mountain.
The shelter will be 5-feet square, according to the Forest Service.
The deadline for responses under the 30-day public comment period is Jan. 8.
"This scoping period is intended to provide those interested in or affected by this proposal an opportunity to make their concerns known prior to a decision being made by the responsible official," District Ranger Irene Davidson said in her letter.
According to the Forest Service, there are areas in the Carson Ranger District that do not have radio coverage. Radio specialists determined that Jobs Peak would be the best place for improved radio coverage. Solar panels would be placed next to the shelter to power the transmitter. No digging or other ground disturbance would be required.
Officials are calling the transmitter use minor, saying there is no circumstances warranting more analysis or documentation in an environmental analysis or an environmental impact statement.

Copied traffic on the HTF Carson District Net this afternoon. I did not get the details, because I was in the other room. However, it sounds like they are getting ready to switch over to the new frequency pair for the Carson RD. Still unable to determine what the new frequency pairs are at this time.

Last week, radio techs doing checks on 169.875: Slide, Peavine, and Rawe Peak. Still no indication of any new frequency, or what it may be.

I noticed that Leviathan Peak, which covers the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, Markleeville, and Antelope Valley areas of Eastern California, as well as the Carson Valley areas of Western Nevada is now on 172.275 MHz. Also, an indication that the rest of the Carson RD on the Humboldt-Toiyabe will remain on 169.875 for at least the 2018 Fire season. I’m not sure if the rest of the repeaters on the HTF, Carson RD will be switched to 172.275, or if a different frequency will be used, as Leviathan has always been on a separate frequency than the rest of the Forest for some reason.

Toiyabe NF Leviathan Pk repeater question

Do i understand correctly from swylies post that leviathan pk has been changed?
Also it shows TOI8 LEV so is it tone-8 (103.5) or tone-2 (123.0)?

You are correct sir, Leviathan is now 172.275. I recently copied traffic, albeit not very much. Also, to my knowledge, from what I have copied, it is still Tone 8. I believe the reason that Leviathan used to be on 169.975, was that Sierra NF was using 169.875 as an input to one of their nets, and that has been changed also. So, my guess is that they did this to reduce or prevent interference, due to Leviathan’s location, relative to the other Humboldt-Toiyabe repeaters, which as you know are still on 169.875, at least up here in Northwestern Nevada.
