To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is this possible?

I'm working on a project for a customer who has a fleet of MD782 radios but are interested in purchasing their own repeater instead of renting due to poor coverage.

I stumbled on this site last week: DMR-MARC Network

Looks like they've got a whole network of MotoTrbo repeaters, and #7 in their FAQ near the bottom says that they support other DMR units for voice calls, which is all I'm concerned about. This customer is using one channel, and a "backup" or talkaround. No texting, no telemetry etc...

Does anyone have any experience running another brand DMR on a MotoTrbo repeater?

I use my Hytera PD782 on the network often. The only time problems should arise is when one of the Motorola propriety modes is used. Otherwise, DMR is DMR. I also use a Connect System 750, and many hams use the MD380 Tytera radios.

Sounds like it's just a matter of finding out the current color code of the mobiles, and programming the repeater accordingly. If I use an XPR8400 that has minimal programming options, it appears that I'd be safe.

The DMR-MARK network is not a commercial repeater system, and just programming a radio to work on a repeater does not make you a welcome or legal user. All DMR-MARK users must be registered with the network. DMR-MARC Network Go to the link before you get any ideas about using the system.

No that's not my intention at all, and I understand what the DMR-MARC network is for. Not sure where you got that idea....

I'm trying to figure out if I sell this customer a Trbo Repeater, if their Hytera Mobiles will work on it.

Edit I guess I wasn't clear in my original post that they're not looking to use that network but I found the compatibility info on that site.

Sorry about that.

Yeah the Hyteras will work on moto repeaters no problem. A large network where I'm at in NC is all Motorola repeaters and there's all sorts of radios from Motorola, Hyteras, tytera, connect systems and so on on the system. You just can't use some of the Motorola proprietary features with other radios but if it's a basic system it probably isn't an issue.

I use a Hytera portable on a Motorola system (with Enhanced Privacy to boot).... No issues at all.

Yes, digital mode will work just fine (unless something Moto specific is being used, like Capacity Plus).

Here's where you run into a problem. Many Moto Trbo repeaters being used today are 450-512 MHz repeaters which are hex edited to work in the 440 ham freq's. Now for a 403-470 Moto radio to communicate with any Moto repeater, be it 403-470, or 450-512 MHz, there's no problem. But when you use Hytera radios, a 403-470 Hytera radio will NOT work with a 450-512 Moto repeater that is hex edited to work at 440 MHz. It will have no problem communicating with a 403-470 repeater. However, if the radios are to be used in the 450-470 business band, it doesn't matter what split radio/repeater is used. But there are users here who only own Hytera radios, & can not communicate on the 450-512 XPR8300/8400 repeaters that are hex edited to work at 440 MHz.

I have never heard of this issue. Do you have any links to folks having this issue? Genuinely interested in reading about this.

No, I only know people including myself who have the problem. My personal Harris HDP150 [rebadged PD782] will not work on hi split UHF Moto XPR8300/8400's that were hex edited to work at 440 MHZ. The Hytera PD782 I used to own had the same problem. Hector, AD4C has the same problem with his Hytera radios using them on Bob, W2GGI's Palm Beach repeater which is a hi split 8300 that's on 440. He had to borrow a CS750 to use on Bob's repeater. Rick, AC4XQ's 1st DMR HT [PD782] would not work on his hi split 8300, so he sold the repeater, & now uses Hytera repeaters, which seem to work fine with any radio. So this isn't from what I've read, it's from my personal experience, & friends' experience too.

I would suspect something like symbol deviation or modulation fidelity is not in spec since you are forcing the repeater to operate where it wasn't designed.

Hytera may be less forgiving of out of spec conditions.

And it's funny, because some days my Harris radio works perfectly on these repeaters, & other days it doesn't work at all. But it always works perfectly on 403-470 repeaters. One day it worked perfectly, then after 10 minutes the repeater was cutting in, & out, & 10 minutes later it couldn't hear the repeater at all. But the next day it worked perfectly on the same repeater.

The reason DMR-MARC only runs MOTRBO repeaters is they monitor the network continuously. Their software doesn't work with non-motorola repeaters. They sorta micro-manage everything, and to do that, they require only Motorola repeaters connected to their system.
There is no problem connecting different brand repeaters to 'your" system, but like others have said, you may lose some proprietary features.
DMR is DMR. any DMR mobile or ht can utilize a repeater when configured correctly.

I run a Motorola XPR8400 in mixed analog/digital mode as a single repeater, as when in that configuration, it cannot be networked. That may be a low cost option too for transitioning to digital if the coverage is small enough for a single repeater/site.
