Hello all, I'm really new to all of this. My family had a scanner from the 80s that we used everyday until a few months ago. I got my dad a Uniden BCD996P2 for Christmas. I just got the premium membership so I can easily find the frequencies and everything for my area. I uploaded them to the scanner and now they are on there. Now what do I do? how do I get it to play all the frequencies that are on the scanner? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'm extremely sorry if this has been asked before. Thank you

Push the scan button. And make sure all banks are turned on...
Also turn the volume up. Then turn the squelch down til you hear a hissing noise. Then, turn up the squelch just until the hissing sound stops....

When I press scan it just drops the MHz by 50 on "Custom 1"
How do I turn on all the banks?
I'm so close! ahhh

and the 0 is flashing.
looks like its stuck on 1 frequency and isn't bouncing to all the other ones. I have 17 in total

If you look at the display. It should show the numbers up to. If they are not there. Just push each number as the scanner is in scan mode

Okay. But now it's back on Air and a random frequency. If I press search it just finds a frequency that has a good signal. And the numbers don't do anything. I can press 1 but I don't really know what that does. Any other number and it beeps at me :(

have you downloaded and read the users manual?

Somewhat. I didn't think it would be such a headache. The scanner we had, you just pushed in the frequencies and that was it. Now that I have it programed I just don't know where to go from there. It shows one of the frequencies that I have programed. It isn't going to any of the rest. Half the time I'm in "air" and it is just giving me random frequencies with nothing on the frequency but static

It sounds like you need to lock out the Custom banks or pre-programmed banks in the 996.. Like the "Air Band" bank and the "Custom1" bank.."Ham" "Military" etc.. These custom bank settings or (service search) can be locked out in the software.. so you don't scan all those banks.. that would allow you to just scan the frequencies and talk groups you downloaded/programmed. If i don't lock all those out when programming it will usually scan up a birdie freq and it will stay locked on that frequency until its locked out..

TIP: Try setting your SQUELCH to a setting of SO:02 !!! (That is what I keep my BCD996XT's at, etc.)
Having to low a setting of SO:01 will cause false triggers and you will stop on inactive frequencies, etc.
Likewise to high a setting of SO:04 or more and you might miss some traffic - being desensitized, etc.

TIP: Edit your location profile to include both your city and state info as this will "help folks help you" !

Q#1: You mentioned that you all used your 80's scanner until a few months ago - did it break or go silient?

Q#2: What State and County will your dad monitor with his new BCD996P2 ? (the RRDB is all by county)

Q#3: What local agencies does you dad wish to monitor ? (members can help when we learn Q's 1,2&3 ;)

Enok, you mentioned that you "uploaded" 17 frequencies to your BCD996P2 were they all conventional ?
What software program did you use? Did you use FreeScan? It sounds like you have service searches on?
I do not see any Motorola P25 Phase 2 systems in Wayne Co only Motorola P25 Phase 1 linked below:
The Talkgroups in the database marked "DE" you might either skip or lockout so the encryption is avoided.

Michigan's Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS)
Michigan's Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) Trunking System, Statewide, Multi-State - Scanner Frequencies

I would think this would be the systems site you need to program to hear your desired talkgroups:
2 (2) 023 (17) Wayne County Simulcast Wayne, MI
851.7125 851.8625 852.300 852.550 852.7875 853.050 853.1875
853.2875 853.300a 853.5625 853.775 853.800 853.825c 854.2375
854.3125 854.5125 855.2375 855.3125 855.5125 855.7875 855.8375
855.9125 855.9875 856.0125 856.1625 860.8125 860.8875 860.9125a

Wayne County (82) Dearborn Talkgroups

DEC HEX Mode Alpha Tag Description Tag
22245 56e5 D 82DBPD911 Police: Dispatch [patched to 158.850 MHz] Law Dispatch
22246 56e6 D 82DBPDCAR Police: Car-to-Car Law Tac

22339 5743 D 343FG2 Fire: Fireground 2 Fire-Tac
22708 58b4 DE 343PDB1 Police: Detective Bureau Law Tac

Wayne County (82) Dearborn Heights Talkgroups

DEC HEX Mode Alpha Tag Description Tag
22084 5644 D 82DHFD1 Fire: Dispatch Fire Dispatch
22085 5645 D 82DHFD1 Fire: Fireground Fire-Tac
22086 5646 D 82DHPD1 Police: Dispatch Law Dispatch
12243 2fd3 DE 82DHISD1 Police: Investigative Services Division 1 Law Tac
12244 2fd4 DE 82DHISD2 Police: Investigative Services Division 2 Law Tac

I hope for your sake that someone with boots on the ground will come along to best guide your setup ;)
I looks like the Dearborn PD Conventional VHF & UHF freqs are marked "Deprecated" as no longer in use
so using a massive time savor software program like FreeScan would be your best bet to keep you sane !
Just don't get check box happy or your dad will be overwhelmed and turned off hearing so many groups !
For starters just check the Wayne Co Simulcast group of 800 Mhz P25 Phase 1 trunking site frequencies.
Try only checking those talkgroups I listed just to take your new scanner for a test drive and keep it simple!
Later you can show your dad what all is available and perhaps later entertain more groups - keep it focused
Now see had you spent the extra $ on the BCD536HP or HP2 then the RRDB would be built in and weekly
updates or changes are much easier to process. Not to mention entering your ZIP, Range, Service Types
desired ie Law Dispatch , Law Tac, Law Talk type groups and toggle the rest off as your mood desires etc.
You do have a good scanner and once you mold it as you would clay it will transform into a usefull tool :)

Just for teaching and recalling you said you programed "17" so far ? You did not mean any old frequencies
listed in the RRDB as "deprecated" or depreciated ... your PD's have migrated to your trunking system.

158.85000 KQA878 RM 071 DPL Dearborn PD 1 Police Dispatch FMN Deprecated
156.15000 KQA878 BM 103.5 PL Dearborn PD 2 Police Car-to-Car FMN Deprecated
155.73000 KQA878 M 100.0 PL Dearborn PD 3 Police Supervisors FMN Deprecated
423.50000 KQA878 RM 125 DPL Dearborn PD 4 Police Detectives FMN Deprecated
423.60000 KQA878 RM 125 DPL Dearborn PD 5 Police Special Operations FMN Deprecated

Your Dearborn Heights PD seem like they migrated away from conventional freqs only leaving maybe PW?
453.10000 WNLG504 RM 141.3 PL DerbornHghts DPW Public Works FMN Public Works

Bottom line when I load a scanner with FreeScan I check the radio button to "Erase All System & Settings"
that way I only upload exactly what I want and wipe out any other Aircraft or Ham etc searches piled on to
what I want to scan. Remember the airwaves are a radio jungle full of static and potential noise interference
sometimes the strangest things cause interference: AC Power and location - expirement with locations etc.
Please double check that Squech setting of "2" OK dad got it your on you own buddy!
Hang with the learning curve grasshopper it can be learned and your pitfalls overcome - it takes patience ;)
