Ive got a list of ICT and other airports around Wichita. But it just seems to me I'm not getting the whole conversation. When i was invited to fly i heard alot more going on then I do with a scanner or other radios.

My radio is Yaesu VX-7r with WFM, NFM and AM hooked up to a external antenna 60' ft in the air.

Now I do hear some Aircraft but it is like the tower is talking but Im not hearing the responce back.

I am in the AM mode.

So, could any amature pilots or more advance scanner buffs give me the 101's of Aircraft communications? Or point me into the right direction of a good website that would help.

Your rarely hear the ground stations on a scanner unless you're near an airport and that accounts for half of the traffic.

The ATC comms are aimed at the sky, while the aircraft comms are aimed at the ground. This is why you'll most likely only hear the aircraft and not the controller. You'll only get the controler if you're REALLY close to the airport. However, with your antenna setup you should be able to hear aircraft from some relatively far distances.

With your antenna setup you should probably have a decent chance of hearing some Center or Tracon comms (ATC side also). The ATC transmitters are generally higher power than your typical airport ATC. If you are merely scanning airport freqs, expand your horizon and search between 118.0 and 136 mHz AM for the REST of the aviation fun.

I see this is kind of an old post but maybe you'll still see it. In answering your original question about not hearing everything such as the controllers talking and not always hearing the aircraft replying you could be experiencing simulcasting. That is where there are two different frequencies tied into one controller. Example: Here in Nashville one departure freq is 118.400 and approach is 127.175. It's not uncommon for these two to be patched together so you'll hear the controller on both but the aircraft will be on one or the other. Sometimes both departures are together and approaches etc. When it's not a peak time. You definitely see a lot of this with the VHF/UHF pairings. Hope this helped some.

Thanks Joe

I was wondering if that happened from time to time... My next question would be is how would you know what freqs go with each other?

I know in wichita the have Light ( small aircraft) Heavy ( Large Aircraft)and 2 runways with Cessna and Lear jet corperation an each side of the aposing runways. I use AirNav.com to get my info from but Im no pilot so some of that info is hard to decypher since im not familliar to the acronyms they use.

If you can make heads or tales of it Here is the link:
http://www.airnav.com/airport/KICT

BTY...I do have a Duel VFO Tranciever to enter the frqs in. Yeasu VX-7R and also a preamp to boot.

Thanks
