Shaun, first you will need a program that unzips and extracts files. I use enzip, it is a free program and can be downloaded at www.Majorgeeks.com. There are other unzipping programs there as well. I will walk you through the steps when you are ready.

I realize now that your post is from 1:24am. Give me an email when you are ready. Try this first:

You must first download and install the 396t firmware loader software. After you have done that, you download the latest firmware file. The loader software will ask you for the firmware file and from there you follow the "Guided" instructions to update the firmware. Both the firmware loader software and latest firmware file can be found at
www.Uniden.com.

somebody said with xp u dont need a unzipper is that true ?
Well, not exactly true. An extracting utility is built into Win XP. You don't have to install a 3rd party version. Zipped files must still be extracted.

hey dude,

when you go to download the file click save, when it is done click open folder. when that folder opens click Extract all files in the upper left corner of the screen. and it ill do the rest and you should be able to get the firmware update

No need to download the USB driver. But you must download and install the BCVUP firmware update loader and install it.

Yes extract the file to your documents file. That is where I extract it to but you can extract to anywhere you want. Extract it to your desktop if you want, and when you are done using it delete it.
