Has anyone here used the mobile magnate mount from radio shack as a base antenna? I used to have it on my car, but I have that nasty habit of forgetting about it when I park in garages. Instead I am using the one that looks like a cell antenna. Did I upgrade or down grade?

I've had the Mag-Mount before also, and I too ALWAYS forget about it. I park in a garage nightly, and nightly I hear a crash as I pull in. I switched to the cell style thru the glass mount and I do not notice much difference. I pretty much only monitor local stuff so it may make a difference in long-range scanning.

Not sure what you mean... mag mount ant inside the house?
If so - no problem. For a scanner, stick it to anything metal. If nometal cabinet, etc, available - stick it to a pizza pan and put it on the top shelf in the closet. Not the purist's ideal, but it'll work.

Mag-mount

I just installed a permanent mount on the roof of my truck for that exact reason. Before that i could not park under my carport or car garages because the mag-mount was to tall. It works great. It is an antenex commercial scanner antenna that is used on police cars. I know some people don't like the idea of drilling holes in their vehicles, but it actually works better due to a much better ground. I am going to put one on my wifes van in the near future.
