• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I took my antenna down and unhooked the antenna

All I can say is I tried. I live in redneck country and you will never be accepted here. Minute I key up and say anything I am told I am not welcome here. To many good ole boys that think all the channels are theirs. Will keep the equipment for emergencies, but unless you are on welfare but have money for a thousand watt amp you will never be able to talk on the radio.

Don't get mad, get even. I'm not advocating using an amplifier, but, well, you know. If you hear just the slightest amount of skip when the gool ole boys are talking local, key up and talk to the skip. Never mind they will jam you, just pretend to have the DX conversation. If nothing else you will feel better.

I'd be thrilled to have ANY locals (good or bad) on the CB these days. 35 years ago we had easily 200+ locals on the air every day. Now it's just me and 2 other guys. The rest of my "locals" are 25-60 miles away and requires using SSB to talk to them.

Do what prcguy suggested. Get even. Have fun with it. Pretend you don't hear them and that you're talking to somebody else every time they key up. Just talk to your "imaginary" contact, ignoring the other guys, and maybe toss in a "i got some local yahoos trying to talk, but you're walking all over them". That will surely get them all wound up.

i had a guy like one of the old boys in my old neighborhood.
he bought a small amp that wiped out the TV's around him and the old folks lived for TV.
in my garage of goodies was an old plug-in style CB with a back of the set antenna.
i lived 150 feet away from him.
so with no antenna showing he wondered how i could cut through all his buddies.
i told him to take the amp off, or i would dead-key every night all night.
he had no idea where i was so, he stopped.

I remember my CB days. There used to be non stop entertainment. Of course there was lots of arguments but lots of laughter and fun. Everthing seemed to slowly die out. I think I did more peak and tuning on radios and other things.

I'd probably get banned for my real suggestion as to exactly what to do.

I'll be a bit circumspect by just saying to tell them they can either talk to you or listen to you. Rubber bands and mp3s are your friend...

Apply for your GMRS License and all those trailer park boys won't be a problem anymore. No amplifier needed, because you'll be legal for up to 50 watts on base or mobile. $35 is the only thing stopping you. People on Gmrs are Much nicer to talk to.

OR,,,do what I did to channel 6. Set up a round robin RTTY loop and run that with a TMC FRT-2.5 K.
After 20 minutes, unkey and all you hear is nothing save for some guy way off in skip land saying "WOW".

I didn't say ditch it, but it's another tool in the toolbox. Much less noise, and Nicer people to talk to.

Nobody knows who/where you are, hide yor antenna with a BBTD and hammer down with a LOT of power.
Play a full album from Iron Butterfly.

Not a horrible idea, but that's not what GMRS was designed for. It's not "HAM-like" or "CB-Like", at least not around here. It's meant for a group of friends or family to communicate while traveling, hunting, camping, etc. Some bigger cities have multiple big repeaters and people use them like CB/Ham to rag chew with others, but the reality is for 95% of the country it's dead silence. I hear way more chatter on FRS. In my general area we have about 78 registered users. I only ever hear 2-3 other people randomly on the big repeater here (40 mile coverage). Otherwise it's dead, dead, dead. I assume those other 75 registered users are using the service for what it was designed for and aren't wanting to rag chew with strangers.

I use GMRS the way it was intended. I have my own repeater. It covers about 10 miles, but i mainly set it up for neighborhood watch and some local farmers that are close by. I also have an "ammo can" solar powered repeater i built that i take with me camping, etc to extend our range when using handhelds.
