Given that they are advertising the radio for 11125.00 Euros... that converts to.... gasp... ahem.... $14,601.00 US Dollars.

Do I send my kids to college, or get this radio?

The ICOM-R9500 is cheap in the US I paid 20 Gran in Australia and that was a Good Deal because I got the Digital Board put in at no charge and they also took off about 1000 dollars on top.

ICOM IC-R9500 USA version limitations

If you read the new english datasheet for the 9500 there is the following:

Analog TV tuner (NTSC/PAL/SECAM)*2

*1 Some functions are not available depending on operating mode or band.

*2 Except USA version

So, does *2 mean that there will be no TV tuner or is the position misplaced and they meant that SECAM is not supported in USA?

Here is the new datasheet: http://www.icom.co.jp/world/products/pdf/IC-R9500.pdf

I would guess that since PAL or SECAM isn't used in the US it won't be supported in the US units. Just a shot in the dark here but perhaps they have a NTSC board unique to the US market while they intend a PAL/SECAM board for other markets.

Hello,

Considering that ICOM always seems to put stupid limitations in their equipment, I would say that the USA version has no Analog TV Tuner feature at all. Likely ICOM America said that the US only has Digital Cable TV, that Analog TV is history, and/or that it is illegal for a television display be visible to the driver of a vehicle.

ICOM sells the IC-7000 transciever that has TV reception capability disabled on the USA version.

Hello its seems that ICOM has a lot off limitations and problems with there Receivers in the US in Australia its Different they do not have these problems with any of there Receivers but we do pay a Price to get ICOM,maybe the US is a different market and our Radios do not have any gaps in frequencies at all like other models.

Lino: ICOM has marketed a special version of product exclusively to Australia for many years. Look in the owners manual for the receiver. It always used to list the frequency range of the radio sold to each market/country.

Enjoy your '9500!

That is why Australia is called the lucky country and it speaks for itself when it comes to Radios because we do not have limitations when it comes to Radios but then again we pay for it.

I saw that note as well, and I initially read it as there is no TV tuner at all in the US models.
For what it is worth, the US version of the R9000 did have the TV tuner installed and working. Amber TV anyone? It is actually pretty cool, and some people are (or used to be) really into DX TV...
The current HDTV cutover date for US broadcasters is now Febuary 2009, so in 2 years the lack of the NTSC tuner will not really matter that much.
Edit - I just checked, and the Universal Radio site does show "Analog TV reception (NTSC/PAL)" as a feature.

I think the more interesting use would be for various wireless video surveillance cameras that use NTSC format. I don't think there would be a great deal of interest in using the 9500 as a twenty thousand dollar 7 inch color television for watching episodes of “24” and reruns of “wheel of fortune”. I could be wrong however.

that's correct, the tv reception is similar to the r3, tune into wireless cameras and such.

And the R-7000 most certainly did have a TV addon available. It was just such low-demand here that they chose not to include it.
