Are you using the correct plug (section 1 rear panel) and is it wired correctly?... if so, you may wish to revisit section 4, keyer set mode in your IC-7000 manual and see if there is something that you may of inadvertently missed.

You should be able to use the mic as a keyer too.

plug is 3 pole 1/4" with the key wired to the tip section and the grnd section of the plug as page 11.

radio is set to no brk in, so basically radio tx is off.

now the odd bit, it says for no brk in operation connect a switch to pins 2+3 of the acc plug.
if i do this i get tx when the radio is turned back on!! ?

set to straight key in the menu and the memory keyer kicks in no problem with the brk in off.

lol starting to do my head in, probably me doing something daft.

all help appreciated

i have tested with a m/meter and there is no short. i get a circuit when the key is pressed.
would running off 12v batteries be a problem? i know the radio will not push full power when not at 13.8v.
but i would have thought it would let me practise with no power output!!

It sound like you're doing everything correctly. Do you have anything to check to make sure the plug is wired correctly?

Is the radio in the CW mode? Most radios do not recognize the key input, if it is in another mode.

There is nothing odd about it. If you are set to the "no break-in" mode, hitting the key does not activate the transmitter. That connection is suggested so that you can operate in the CW mode, but manually operate the transmit function. Some hams do not like to operate "break-in".

If you only intend this configuration for practice, you don't need that switch. When you are actually operating, you would switch the IC-7000 back to break-in (Full or Semi). Page 85 of your manual explains the difference.

thanks for the explanation of the no brk in martin, makes sense now.

just had the radio on to go through the settings again,no joy!!
is there a way the cw tx can be turned off in the menu? cannot see why it would be as it transmits ok in all other modes. must be something simple that iam missing...or is it just me being simple?

might drop an email to the local icom service centre to see what they have to say.

seem to be going nowhere fast.

The radio will work when properly set up.

1. make sure your in "CW" mode

2. Access menu and select type of key your using (Straight) Described
on page 50 item 5 in manual.

3. Page 85 in the manual describes the various break in functions and how
to set them up. The selections are "BKN" which is break in operation,
"FBK" is fast break in and when neither shows in the display, the transmitter
keying is off and you can key the side tone for practice without transmitting.

The manual explains both break in selections but fails to mention the blank one !

Note - I tried it on mine and it works fine...

gone through that a couple of times DMV with no joy.
i called the local icom centre just in case they have any input.....
they reckon its the socket thats at fault, iam inclined to believe them as the socket is a bit rough
when you insert the plug. smooth when taking it out/rough and feels not quite right when pushing plug in.
will take a trip and let them have a look. as its a 2nd hand radio they maybe right!! its only 2 years old though, and mint externally.

Sorry it didn't work. I have two of those rigs and both function as described
in my above post with no problem..
Please leave us know how you make out with the shop. Sure sounds
like a key jack problem.. Good luck..
