I just received the IC-7100, and I want to use a Green LIght Labs GPS710, and open it and rewire the pinout to work with the mic jack on the rear of the radio, there is 8 volts out. My question is, does anyone know if the mic jack is live on the rear if you have a microphone on the rear of the faceplate?

The greenlight labs takes I believe 6 to 16 volts input, and has an amazing receiver.

My 2nd Question its my understanding, and im hoping someone can verify, if I plug in a TinyTrak 4 in the 6 pin mini din port and have it running 24-7, sending GPS PTT data, I can set the radio only to ackknowledge the PTT only if I have the data on, and I can program that to a memory channel for 144.390 for APRS. and only when then im in memory mode will it then work? or if I choose data mode manually otherwise?

Thanks for confirming if what I am after will work this way.

Ron,

First off, the Green Light GPS is pinned specifically for the Kenwood D710 head, so it will not just plug in and work. I'm not sure if the GPS is designed around the D710 +8VDC head voltage or if it has an internal regulator knocking it down to +5V or +3.3V. Either way, it will not work out of the box as you're expecting.

The GPS has two connections:

1. RJ45 jack that is basically for power and ground leach from the head. The rest of the signals are passed through.

2. 2.5mm (3/32") jack for GPS NMEA data. This is tied to the head with a short jumper.

In order to use this with your TT4, you'll need a cable that connects this NMEA data out jack to the NMEA/GPS input on the TT4. Depending on where you decide to locate the TT4, this could be easily a couple foot cable or possibly much longer if you are remote mounting the head away from the main unit.

Second, I have an Icom 706MKIIG, so I can't claim to know the 7100, but I don't think the 7100 is dual VFO, which what you would need to concurrently run APRS and "some other mode/band" at the same time. Yes, the 6 pin minidin packet port will work for APRS, as long as the radio is tuned to 144.390, set to FM and on data.

The cheapest common GPS that I found that I plan to wire to my 7100 is made by Globalsat, you can get it for very cheap on Amazon with free shipping. You only need to cut the cable, and add your own 2.5mm plug and power. There are only 4 wires plus a shield on the cable. The power leads are color coded red and black, the other two are data. The module needs 5v, so a zener and resistor can handle the very low current draw of the puck which is pegged at 80ma, so a 100ma zener and resistor could be heat shrinked into the cable.
