Per this thread, there is a guy In Georgia that repairs Icom radios. The R71A is a great receiver! I have its brother, the R-7000. Good luck with the repair!

Hi,
Called and after talking, decided not to put more money in the ICOM.

I already had it repaired once a few years ago and it keeps giving problems.

Will probably sell it as non working for someone that can work on it when needed, I can't!

Thanks for the update. Sometimes the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the radio, before factoring in shipping both ways. Sounds like a good project for spomeone with the knowledge and patience to work on it

Your IC-R71 is approximately 40 years old. The problem with older radios, particularly those that used digital components for oscillators, filters, mixers, displays, or memories, is that some components may no longer be available. If they fail, repair may not be possible due to lack of available components.

That said, your radio may be valuable to someone who is trying to repair their radio. They may be able to harvest good, working components from your radio to repair their radio.

Hi,
It has a now 5 year old Willco RAM Battery, that Mike Alexander put in in 2020...

I put the Radio on the Bay.

I have 2 rebuilt SONY 2010's, and will just enjoy those.

Wish the ICOM had lasted, it's a great Radio. but here we are!

Thanks for the help!

From your Ebay:
"Hi,
This Radio was repaired by Mike Alexander in Colorado, in 2020.

He replaced the RAM Battery with a Willco Brand.

The Radio developed a "hum", and then a "pop", and went dead.

Have decided not to send it in again, probably an easy fix for someone in the know!"

Have you tried running it directly from 12V DC (The red jumper on rear)? I helped a friend repair his a few years back. It was the power supply transformer that needed replacing. (Thinking back, maybe it was an IC-R7000 with toroidial transformer) We found a transformer that would fit and was very compatible. But your problem could be the bridge rectifier or a filter cap. These are worthy radios to fix. I would help, but I have about a 5 year to-do list and a bigger bucket list.
