Hello everyone, we're looking forward to buy the Icom IC-V80 handheld but i would like to know if this radio supports roger beep(s) because it's a must on our specific use. If not, can someone recommend me a radio with roger beep support? I did a search on the forums but did not find anything about my question.

Thanks in advance!

The Icom IC-V80 is an amateur radio.

For the most part, amateur radio equipment does not have roger beeps.

Hmm that's okay but, do you have any recommendations for a handheld that does have a roger beep and it's not Chinese ? It's a must on our use of communications that's why i'm asking.

Thanks !

Like W9BU points out. Amateur and commercial FM radios don't have roger beeps. (At least none that I know of). With FM, the squelch tail usually serves to let others know when someone has let go of the mic.

Who are you communicating with that requires radios with a roger beep? What radios do they use?

No good radio will have roger beeps; they are extremely unprofessional.

While most commercial radios don't have a "Roger Beep" function, there are ways to make it act like it.

Depends on who you need to hear the beep, is it the radio operator, or do you need to hear it over the air?

If it's just the radio operator, many radios have a function that does this. On Kenwood's, it's called "PTT Release Tone". When the PTT key is released, the radio will emit a beep through the speaker.

If you need it to go out over the air, you can do something like a DTMF radio ID at the end of transmission. It'll send out a DTMF tone (or multiple tones) when the PTT key is released.

Roger Beep

What you are hearing may not be a Roger Beep, but a single tone encoder to key up the repeater. Most of the time a repeater has its own reset tone, to reset the timeout timer.

Well like you said, i'm looking for that Release PTT Tone thing but i don't know what handheld should i buy that has this feature on it. Although we do use Motorola/Kenwood/Icom (VHF) and they do have this Release PTT Tone but my current handheld(s) do not support any feature like that. I came up with KENWOOD TH-K20E but i do not know if it has this feature can anyone confirm ? Thanks!

That's another radio intended for the amateur radio market.

If your intent is to use these radios on amateur radio frequencies, then, by all means, look for amateur radio equipment. But, if your intent is to use these radios on a commercial or public safety land mobile radio system, then you really should be looking at professional radio equipment.

Are you looking for a radio that sends a DTMF or data burst to identify the radio when you release the PTT?

This one.

Ok, it is not a ‘roger beep’ you want but some form of PTT-ID signaling.

You previously stated you use Motorola radios. What specific models of Motorola and Kenwood radios are you using?

Can you provide some model number strings(photos would be really useful) from under the battery of the radio?

That info would go a long ways to getting you pointed in the right direction for the proper signaling format you are currently using.

You can forget ALL amateur radios.

Might be the 1750Hz tone they use in Europe to bring up repeaters.. Or perhaps a sub-audible tone squelch. (CTSS)

What radios are others using on this system?

It’s not ham gear, and he is using some type of PTT-ID

Here take a look at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO3yxjz-ueA (Forward it at 0:25 sec and watch till 0:32) that's what i want the radio(s) to do, anyways we are using a repeater on VHF analog with -4.600 offset and CTCSS tone to access the repeater & some units have Motorola handhelds although i do not know the models and such but i've seen them (Not even close to those on the video) that do this kind of beep when you release the PTT and also i've seen Kenwood and Icom handhelds do that too.

That’s 5-tone signaling. Pretty common in Europe.

You will not find that on amateur gear.

You need to be looking at proper LMR gear marketed to the European market. 5 tone is not as common in North America.
