Familiarization curve. Learning how to use the RF Gain, AFC/AGC, and Reference display settings.
The noise floor is supposed to raise when I move the tuning knob?

How will the RF Gain AFC/AGC and Reference display settings affect that.

Not normal here.

Thanks. I can't see how external influences (cabling etc) would make this happen. Nor can I imagine any radio settings could change it either.

I'll persevere with it. I also got a free ten(!) year extended warranty on this thing so I'm not worried. LOL

The ratings are also based on adjacent channel interference and in and out of band strong signal interference handling. Not having those kind of issues from your antenna signal, or you use external filters, will make both AOR500 and IC-R8500 to be excellent receivers for the average user.

BTW - I fixed the "squeaky wheel" tuning knob issue that other folks have had. I took the knob off and just kinda fiddled with it, cleaned it up really well, looked for any witness marks and made sure it was fully seated. Tightened it (snug but NOT tight) and its fine now. No annoying squeak at 3am that drives my dogs nuts.
