• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

What is your favorite firearm to shoot holes in paper?

For all the second amendment supporters out there

Perhaps because this thread is showing up on the recent posts list on the front page. For some reason this Tavern forum shows up on the front page.

If you were only allowed to keep ONE firearm, which one would you keep and why?
ahhh if we are 2nd supporters that question will not compute
in fact it almost sounds like baiting to get answers that get compiled into yet another
out of context report for the anti's to use against rational thinking
so based on such, i have no answer

On second look, I sorta agree so I watered it down to generic terms

Charles A. "Skeeter" Skelton addressed this in Shooting Times back in the mid-'70s. I believe that the consensus was that the most useful arm one could have for all purposes was a .22 LR rifle.

I'd surely hate to be limited to just one, but if for some reason I was, especially if I had to pack everything with me on foot, a good .22 LR rifle (with some spare parts and a decent cleaning kit) and a few bricks of good ammo might just be a good way to go. Ol' Skeeter was a pretty smart fellow.

For me its kinda like picking your favorite child

They all seem to have their uses and their pros and cons

I suppose if the wife someday said I had to get rid of em and keep only ONE, I would either look for a new wife or bite the bullet and make the choice

And if I had to pick one I would like to have something that would work for self defense, home defense, hunting, and putting holes in paper

For self defense it would have to be small enough to carry every day 24\7 and have enough capacity to handle a tactical defense against multiple evil dooers
And it has to have enough energy to be valid for hunting small game
at close range in a survival encounter

So my choice would have to be a full size hand gun like the Glock17
loaded with +P ammo

Good +p ammo will certainly give me excellent self defense and home defense capacity
It should be able to take small game or even deer at close range
And the cost of ammo is still cheap enough for plenty of paper shooting every weekend

Only one eh?

Remington 870 12ga

The thing about the 870 is the shear quantity of factory and aftermarket parts that can be swapped around to change from one platform type to the next. Rifled barrels and slugs for hunting deer, smooth bore with a pistol grip and 3" magnum 00 buck for home defense. slugs, shot, and sabot...
Plenty of power to take down a charging bear.

Does everything except be discreet....

Only one:
If I can carry it openly... AKM. If I must conceal... any bottomless 9mm, probably full sized Glock.

Shooting paper:
Ruger MKII.

If "shooting holes in paper" includes ringing steel, plus carrying it for the possibility of needing to shoot holes in 1400-poind big white things that walk on four paws, spend days stalking you for food and would eat you in a heartbeat, then my choice is also an 870.

Remington 870 DM, with 14" barrel, Urbino stock and a magazine full of slugs. In hiking jacket pockets are three more magazines: slugs, buckshot (for wild dogs) and bearbangers.

Simple. Fast. Light. Easy to handle with very few fine motor skills needed.

No junk hanging off it that will fail in challenging conditions, drop shells on the ground or break just when I need it the most.

Necessary part of the kit is bear spray in a pouch on my belt, a pen launcher with flares, bangers and whistle rounds in a pocket and a compact IFAK in an easy to reach place on my belt.

Yeah, I sometimes go places where life is a BIT different and no one is farther than arms length away from a shotgun 24 hours a day. :)

If you were only allowed one firearm, it would still be one too many.

We spend hours reading about people using the wrong type of radio for their licence, or not even having am licence, or using 1W on a milliwatt service and home owner groups measuring people's antennas or banning the totally - I really have to smile sometimes - a few extra milliWatts gets people's blood up, and the people who abuse the the law, or strongly uphold it are morons (insert any other word, they've all been aired). Yet everyone, totally against any kind of common sense whatsoever, can buy a gun? We've all seen the youtube videos that ignore the thousands of reliable, sensible and intelligent gun owners and show teeny-weeny people who can only just hold up a huge revolver firing it with results so obvious to non-gun people like me.

One gun in the hands of an idiot is too many. Maybe there should be an idiot test to own one, like the ham exams?

1. What are the pointy things called?
2. Which end of the tubey thing is the dangerous end?
3. If the gun can fire 6 pointy things, at what point is it safe to look down the hole in the tubey thing?
4. If you don't like loud bangs, how do you fire your gun with both fingers in your ears?
a. Grip the gun between your knees and jump up and down till it goes bang
b. put the gun on the floor and stamp on it until it goes bang?
c, Borrow a friend who can put their fingers in your ears, so you can pull the lever that goes bang?
d. Don't - just shout BANG very loudly.

If you are going to make me pick just one…AR15…mainly because I can configure it to a multitude of different purposes without having to change firearms. My three favorite rounds of them so far are .223/5.56, 300 AAC and .25-45 Sharps. Would likely run the 300 AAC barrel around 12" though.

Now if reconfiguration is out, probably the 98 Mauser (pre-Nazi party markings) that I've been needing to finish for…12 years…chambered in .25-06.
