SPRINGFIELD - Illinois State Police mourn as one of their own is killed in the line of duty.
24-year-old trooper Brian McMillen was killed in a fatal car crash around 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning in Sangamon County.
Two other drivers involved in the accident, both from Decatur have been charged with aggravated DUI.
McMillen just graduated from the police academy in February after serving three tours in the middle east as a member of the Illinois National Guard.
Police aren't saying much about how the crash acctually happened. They say that's still under investigation tonight. It all happened on Dye Road just south of Illiopolis early Sunday morning.
Trooper McMillen was responding to a call to help out a local department. Sometime shortly after he was involved in the three vehicle crash and was killed. This is the first time a state trooper from Springfield has been killed in the line of duty since 1982 and everyone's having a hard time.
"I told his father when I spoke with him this morning before coming over here. I told him I was very proud of his son and I was very proud that he chose the state police as a career," said District 9 Command James Wolf.
McMillen was a Pana native and graduated from high school there. He later went on to get a degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield.
One of the two drivers charged with aggrivated DUI remains behind bars tonight. The other was taken to St. John's Hospital for treatment.
Funeral services for McMillen have not been set.
