SPRINGFIELD - Illinois State Police mourn as one of their own is killed in the line of duty.
24-year-old trooper Brian McMillen was killed in a fatal car crash around 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning in Sangamon County.
Two other drivers involved in the accident, both from Decatur have been charged with aggravated DUI.
McMillen just graduated from the police academy in February after serving three tours in the middle east as a member of the Illinois National Guard.
Police aren't saying much about how the crash acctually happened. They say that's still under investigation tonight. It all happened on Dye Road just south of Illiopolis early Sunday morning.
Trooper McMillen was responding to a call to help out a local department. Sometime shortly after he was involved in the three vehicle crash and was killed. This is the first time a state trooper from Springfield has been killed in the line of duty since 1982 and everyone's having a hard time.
"I told his father when I spoke with him this morning before coming over here. I told him I was very proud of his son and I was very proud that he chose the state police as a career," said District 9 Command James Wolf.
McMillen was a Pana native and graduated from high school there. He later went on to get a degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield.
One of the two drivers charged with aggrivated DUI remains behind bars tonight. The other was taken to St. John's Hospital for treatment.
Funeral services for McMillen have not been set.

Trooper McMillen was a Friend

Brian was a family friend of mine. The actions that led to his death are ones that are stupid and irresponsible. The two "men" that were involved had just left the bar, en which Brian was en route to back up the Sangamon County deputy who had got hit over the head. Brian was doing his job, and doing it well. He graduated first in his Cadet Class 113 and was known to be one of the best Illinois had ever produced.
Please, for the lives that were taken, and the lives that must live in after this horrible action that took place, educate those around you about the dangers of drinking and driving. Yes, this is might be redundent issue, but both "men" involved had to much to drink and "thought" they were "ok". Now they have ruined not one, but several lives linked to a 24 yr old young man.
One week after Brian's death the ISP did an imprompto DUI detial in the Sangamon county area. In five hours, they took five drunks off the road. People need to learn!
At Brian's funeral there were over 800 sworn police officers from around the nation. The SJR... had their numbers wrong. I stood among over 600 Illinois State Troopers and another 200 from other agencies inside and oustide Illinois.
Officers from MO, IN, TN, AR, AL, TX DPS, and many more came to show their support. If there was anything that we learned is that family(other police officers) will always stand side by side, and toe to toe with the bad guys and walk that thin blue line to protect the public from the evil doers that walk this earth. I dont care if you are a campus sworn police officer, to a corrections officer, to a state trooper, all you should be proud to put on the uniform of distenction and go out to help the public.
