I’m looking to purchase a good home-based scanner where I can easily input frequencies. The problem that I’m having with my hand-held scanner is that it’s nearly impossible to input a specific frequency. Although I do have some experience with scanners and two-way radios; I am not an expert. To expound on what I’m looking for is this: I live in an area where there are frequent power outages. When the power goes out I want to listen to both the normally scanned frequencies, as well as to specific frequencies that I have added to my scanner to scan only those frequencies; such as: local (NOAA) weather, (AMOS) automated flight weather observing system, county police, fire and EMS radio, etc. I have a back-up generator. I can install a separate antenna located on the outside of my house. My budget is up to $700.00. Any help would be appreciated.

Most scanners sold today allow you to enter frequencies.

Here is a listing of scanners.

I recommend a phase II scanner, and specifically a 996P2 or one of the SDS models.

They all fall within your budget. Good luck!

There's also the Whistler TRX-2.
It'll do more than the Unidens and won't break the bank.
It may not be quite is good handling the P25 Simulcast trunking systems (if there's one in your area) as the SDS model, but that may not be an issue for what you want to listen to.

I'd recommend either the SDS-100 (hand-held) or the SDS-200 (base). It uses free software Sentinel. You can create a Favorites List of just about anything you want.
