well i finally broke down and bought a scanner, i went to the local radio shack and they didn't have a huge selection to choose from so i ended up with the PRO-2067 Mobile Trunking Scanner.... So i brought it home plugged it in hoping all i had to do was hit the scan button and it would pick up who ever came over the radio in my area...

well its been scanning for a few hours so i called my friend up and he said that our local PD was doing something and i should of heard it well i never did....

I bought the cable and some 7 day free trial thing with it and made a sad attempt to program it...

Basically i don't even know where to begin with this thing!! i've searched and searched and the only thing i found was that this scanner is terrible if your a beginner lol... so if someone can point me in the right direction i would be very happy.

Are you sure it's a 2067? Those haven't been current since around 2002. I have the third generation 163. The one between those two was the 2055. You have to go to the database and see what your state, county, and local pd's and fd's frequencies are.

Did the radio arrive with an instruction manual of some kind? If not there's something basically wrong with the purchase you made and you should go back to the store and straighten things out with them.
Generally speaking, a scanner will not operate satisfactorily if all you do is plug it in and turn it on.

Knowing that the Shack isn't always scanner savvy, where abouts do you reside? It helps us to steer you in the right direction:)

You will love that radio ! I am sitting here looking at mine now :)
Its easy to program unless its a trunked system you want to listen to.

The SRCH (search button can be your friend):) It allows you to choose from 8 different types of scanning. Check your manual for all that you can monitor. Anything from CB to ham radio.

I have the PRO 163 I can walk you through it. First let us know where you are and what you want to monitor.

Basically all i need the scanner to do is scan the immediate surrounding area FD's in case we get a mutual aid call.

i figured out how to type in frequencies and hear my local FD dispatching etc.

Some of the county FD/PD is on the EDACS trunked system. You will need to get this programmed into your scanner. Not all are VHF/UHF anymore. The quick and easy way to do this is with a limited premium subscription, USB programming cable, and programming software. Unless you are really familiar with programming the newer generation of scanners, this is the way to go.
http://www.starrsoft.com and http://www.psredit.com offer thirty day free trials of their software. The Shack sells the cable.
You can set up the ten banks in the scanner to monitor different areas of the county.

is my understanding correct

This is my first post and this discussion is what I need to know. I'm helping somebody set up their Pro-163 and we are new at trunking scanners. He wants the scanner programmed for police / fire in cities of Milwaukee County Wisconsin. Am I correct that if I get the Radio Shack USB-PC cable (20-546 I think) and software from PSREdit - Configuration Editors for the new GRE line of scanners, it should be relatively easy to program?

I would be willing to pay someone to do it locally, but have not found anyone. I'm willing to purchase the cable and do it myself if it will be not too difficult. I am very familiar with computers, but not with the newer generation of scanners.

Thanks !!!!
