Does anyone know how to use A Ham radio to go over the IRLP (voip). Let me be a little more specific. I know that some repeater sites have the IRLP (voip) capability. I know that to access a site within your radio range and to activate this feature you input a DTMF Node code. But then what? If I want to speak to someone in Ireland, then after I have activated the site close to me, do I then input the DTMF node code for the repeater that I'm trying to reach?

In a word .. yes.

I enjoy using *20 to connect to a random node, but if you know what the node is that you want to connect to use that instead.

Sorry,
But that's not exactly what I'm looking to find out. I have a list of Nodes from the IRLP website. What I'm trying to figure out is how to put them to use. Do I first input the local repeater node code then input the node code for the one that I'm trying to reach? Or do I simply find a repeater that is capable of this, and input any node code at all and it takes me to that site. Thanks

You probably need to contact the owner/trustee of your local repeater to get the local access codes. Some repeaters require a membership key before allowing you to use their repeater to connect to IRLP.

1. Find out which of your 144/440 repeaters have IRLP hooked up and a node registered.
2. No IRLP hookup in your area, you are SOL.
3. If you do have a hook-up, find out from the Club Sysop how you access the IRLP node. After listening, transmit on the repeater asking if it is in use. If not, say "accessing IRLP". For my case, I just depress and hold the transmit key and then the D key on the DTMF panel followed by the four digit IRLP node number.
4. Take your hand off the transmit button and listen. You will usually hear an acknowledgement of the connection.
5. Follow the calling protocol that is well stated in the IRLP.org discussion to let people know that you're listening via IRLP and listening for a call.
6. When you're done, there is a disconnect code that the sysop can give you. For me that is D73. Quick and Easy.
