Is Comet DS-150S or Diamond X-30 better as a scanner antenna?

Hi,

I have both the mentioned antennas and was wondering witch one would be the better for scanning.

Mostly UHF around 420 - 470 MHz and VHF 118-170 MHz.

A discone of equal element lengths will have identical performace.
The only difference will be the physical build of the antennas, heavier
element material, better hardware etc...

These are two very different types of antennas, so it depends on what your definition of "better" is. If your definition of "better" means covering a broad frequency range of 25 - 1300 mHz (but no gain), then the Comet is better. If you definition of "better" is having some gain in two more narrow, specific freq ranges (the 2M and 70cM Amateur Radio bands) then the Diamond is "better".

I see. As mentioned in the first post I am mostly listening to UHF around 420 - 470 MHz and VHF 118-170 MHz.

Both of these are outside of the ham bands so I`ll start with the discone antenna and try that first.

Long Beach ca,
Your needed coverage is so narrow..... also look into a Omni Directional antenna which will have lots of gain, to where the Discone has none.

Good luck with your project
