Can anyone confirm if East Brunswick has gone encrypted?

I just bought a new P25 capable scanner (Uniden BCD436HP) and I can hear most of the towns nearby, but nothing from East Brunswick, South River or Spotswood (all on EB system). I live very close to the EB tower, so it's not a signal issue.

TIA

Yes, all of the Police talkgroups for East Brunswick and South River are full-time encrypted. They have been that way since the switch-over from analog to P25 mode. The rest of the services (Fire, EMS, DPW, BOE) are in the clear; however, there are a selected few that are also encrypted (one of the BOE talkgroups has encryption on the portable radios) and Talkgroup 5002 runs in ENC.

Spotswood Police are encrypted on their conventional channel; I have yet to verify if they are encrypted on the talkgroup that they have on the Trunked Radio System for East Brunswick.

Most places are going encrypted. Bad thing is it really does hinder the idea of Interoprability even within your own municipality when joint services are needed.

Not really. Most areas have plans for Common Encryption keys to be shared for Interop purposes and the newer radios (unlike the older radios) can contain multiple Keys (it then becomes a training issue)

Thanks to everyone who responded.

I sent the scanner back to Amazon for a full refund.

That is only true if both are encrypted and running encryption. There are still many departments who are just simply not on the same page. 700mhz to 800mhz. Analog/Digital. EDACS/ProVoice to P25. Proprietary radio systems that hinder interop. Encryption is the least of people's worries.

YMMV - but to have the ENC Key for another agency has no bearing on the other agency running CLR or ENC. Radios can have many keys in them, even if that Primary agency never uses ENC and routinely runs CLR :D
