Is the front end on my TS-2000 cooked?

I finally strung my G5RV up in the back yard. I connected it to ANT1 on my TS-2000, went down to 10 meters, hit tune, and it tuned up. Success. However, I noticed that all I was receiving was full meter scale RF noise. I changed bands, exactly the same thing. The noise sounds the same no matter what band (HF-6m) I'm on. When I click over to 2m the noise goes away, but I can't hear anything. I can tune the same local repeater on the main and sub bands, and key up. The main band doesn't hear it, and the sub band does.

I'm not sure what the heck would be close enough to me to put out enough RF to cook the front end of my RX in less than a minute, if that's what happened.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks.

Not really enough info here to try and help you out. The TS-2000 is a complex
radio.

Only one question comes to mind - if you put any hf freqs in the sub-band do
you receive anything? If so then you got a problem with the main band logic
control or receiver. If that's the case you will have to ship it back to kenwood
or an authorized service center.

EDIT: Also - did you try doing a reset to the radio?

I did a reset, same symptoms. Edit: Sub band will not do HF.

ok - check for local noise sources - perhaps you have a internet router or modem
that is emitting noise or perhaps some other device in the house that is causing
havoc with the receiver on hf. try removing power to this stuff one by one and see
if the noise goes away.

perhaps your local power co is doing broad band over the power lines and your
getting noise on hf from that.

also - perhaps you have a local am broadcast station that is overloading the hf
receiver. it could be many things.

I will add, at one point I had the G5RV strung up in the attic, and I didn't experience the same thing. I may put it back up there (ugh) and see if it goes back to the way it was.

ok - perhaps it is a noise source from one of your neighbors or a cable tv device
on a close by pole.

go outside with a small am radio receiver and tune it to a quite channel and see
if you can hear any noise sources in the local area.

your gonna have to start getting creative and imaginative to track this noise source down
and please if you have left any more important facts out do tell as it can have an effect on
ideas from all thread contributors.

Did you try going to 20 meters and see if it's doing it there?

10 is notorious for noise. Believe me, I know.

Whoops forgot to edit this with results. Amazing what an instruction manual will do for you. I had the RF gain set all wrong. Simple fix, and it works like a champ now!

That sounds like you had it set too low and were hearing random electrical noise generated internally with the AF gain turned up.

I used to have a bunch of "if all else fails read the instructions" stickers. Too bad I ran out or I'd send you one. (;->)

Knew it had to be something simple like that.
