I live in Corpus Christi Texas and was wondering if the Yupiteru MVT-9000 MK II would be able to monitor police, EMS, Fire, Military, And Weather? Or if it is not worth buying for my intended purposes.

Its not a good first scanner, but it is a good first Wide-Coverage Receiver that has scanning capability.

They make exceptional receivers, that cover pretty much the entire spectrum of RF where most voice communications happen. All mode so you'll get USB, LSB, AM, FM, WFM. But if you're wanting a police scanner, you're better off picking something like the Radio Shack PRO-97 or Uniden BC-246T or BDC-396.

It sounds like for what you want to do you'd be better off with a trunktracking scanner like the ones I listed above.

Thanks, I appreciate your help. I have also been looking at the Pro 96, but I am waiting for the july 22nd sale to see if the price drops to $399, if not I will look into the 396t.

In all honesty if you're going to pick a digital scanner, it would be in your best interest to go with the Uniden BCD396. For one, the Pro 96 will not cover the new public safety trunked spectrum in 700 mhz. And several newly built systems are being put there. So that might be something to consider. Another thing is you can not control that scanner via the computer, but you can with the Uniden. With the Uniden, you can buy a remote-head that looks just like a full mobile scanner faceplate and mount it in your dash or somewhere else in your vehicle and have total control over you handheld via a cable.

Also someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that the PRO 96 will scan 9600 baud Digital trunked systems. You'll have to have a Uniden digital scanner to get them.

My advice, go look at the database on here for your specific area that you want to listen in to and see what it is they're running, and then go over to the texas forum and ask them if there are any changes mainly in the digital trunking occurring.

I just checked the database for your county, and you're good to go with anything analog for the city and the county of Nueces, most of it is EDACS standard, not digital. The only thing you'd have problems listening to is Highway Patrol they're using APCO25 digital so a 396 would be needed for that. But if you want to jump right in a PRO-97 will do you fine for your area right now. http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=17

Thanks again, I did look into the Pro 97 at one time, but was told that it would not survive rebanding. I will probably go with the 396 if I can find a decent deal on it.

I pulled this up and it might answer some issues about the rebanding. BTW, if a radio shack employee was the one who gave you that information, first rule to follow is NEVER EVER EVER believe anything that comes out of a radio shack employee's mouth. Once in a blue moon you might find one who will actually know what they're talking about but I've not witnessed it since the 80's.

The radio shacks where I live won't even carry the PRO96 and we have an apco25 trunked system here that it works perfectly with, but someone told their regional manager that the pro96 wouldn't work with anything in my area so they decided not to even carry it in-store here. Its special order only. DUMBASSES! But I digress...

The deal with rebanding is that the 800mhz frequencies used for public safety will be shifting some, but the rebanding is slow to move, and pretty much most of the modern scanners will do it. So if you want something cheap and dirty that does the job right now, the PRO 97 will do the trick, and it'll continue to do it with or without rebanding. The only thing you're lacking is the digital.

Yes, the PRO-96 can scan 9600 baud systems, thats where the "96" comes from. It's also the reason for the "96" at the end of Uniden's model numbers.

nexus,
You are right about the Radio Shack employees, I went into the local Radio Shack and told them I was looking for a police scanner, and they pointed me to the radar detectors. I Told them I wanted to see a Pro 97 or Pro 96 and they had no idea what I was talking about. I have no faith in them.

No problem, I would hate to see someone end up with a $500 paperweight.

Like I said, check in the local forum, someone can probably give you a better answer since I am way up here in MN. It does say ProVoice and analog, so there is likely some stuff you can listen to.

Oh crap... I some how over looked that the modes were Analog and Provoice. jetblack, basically what that means is any agency that is using provoice on the edacs system will not be scanable. And there are no plans or authorizations to even produce a scanner that will receive provoice transmissions. I have a county system here like that, all of the law enforcement is provoice while the fire, ems, and public works etc are analog.

I actually had something like that happen to me at radio shack once. I walked in to a local radio shack and asked if they had any PRO-95's left over and the dude looked at me like I was an idiot, he was like uhhh what's that? I said geezus christ... It's a scanner, and turned around and walked out the door, I called another radio shack and the lady answered and when I asked her the same question she said they had 2 left. You can guess where I went and bought mine.
