I bought a similar unit about 10yrrs ago and have done local 10m contacts out to about 60mi from a hilltop and my best contact was from Long Beach, CA to the UK using a 4ft telescopic whip on the HT. That was a real hoot!

Could be useful backpacking hams as an emergency radio....

For a backpack radio the Yaesu FT-817 does it all! 160M - 70 cm all modes. SSB, CW, AFSK,FSK, FM and AM. 10 meter repeaters are a real kick when the band is open. Even has it's own internal electronic keyer. Tons of radio for the size and price.

I guess it does sound fun. I was thinking it was primarily to be modded to annoy folks out-of-band.
