It would take quite a few Double A's To equal the power from the lithium battery. Just not enough juice to power the radio.

Somewhere I remember reading, if the radio had a double A battery pack, it would provide under one hour of power LOL.

Don't remember if it was Paul that said that but it was around June of 2018 when Paul announced the "nip it in the bud" campaign. Replacing the smaller battery and cover with the big butt battery and questions were made about a double A battery pack.

Funny that the IC-R30 has an AA case. Battery life does not match the Li original, but it is better than an hour use.

This is a circular argument. When the early radios (BC100, BC100XL) radios were replaced with radios that used battery packs (BC70XLT, BC100XLT, BC200XLT) it started the "why can't we have a AA option crowd." When the switch back to AA powered radios happened, it resulted in the "it's just easier to have a battery pack in my pocket than multiple small batteries" crowd becoming more vocal. The SDS power requirements pretty much necessitated a move back to a battery pack that AAs can't replicate in an acceptable form factor. The AA purists should realize that there are better, although bulkier options out there with the progression of battery technology.

I carry one of these: Energizer UE10030MP

It is a small form factor, but provides a lot of power that isn't limited to my SDS like a battery pack would be. I have a 6 inch USB cable and although I've never done it, a velcro strap would still provide complete, although bulkier, portability in a pinch.

In the very beginning, there was a brochure distributed to retailers that offered a AA battery sleeve for the SDS100, it looked like an ad. But it was offered only as a preliminary piece and never to be used for advertising purposes. It did not portray the final product, perhaps the included picture of the radio did but that only related to its general appearance. Maybe Uniden thought it would do as a teaser until final decisions were made on other issues. One issue concerned the case Uniden was trying to shoehorn the software defined radio into. It was too small. It was known the SDS100 was going to need a lot more power than you could get out of the 3 AA cells needed to power the BCD436HP, which preceded the SDS100 and that was a major issue, how to supply enough power to get a reasonable length of time from a battery pack. But while all that was going on one of the retailers released that brochure as an advertisement. It got walked back once it was realized it was not an accurate portrayal of the finished product, and they stopped using the brochure as advertising copy.

The idea of a AA battery sleeve portrayed in the ad had been discarded by Uniden well before the inaccurate ad copy was released as advertising by one of the retailers, but although it was improper of the retailer to release the brochure as ad copy, Uniden must share the blame for allowing the inaccurate brochure to end up in the retailer’s possession. It was probably unintentional all around and I don’t blame anyone. It’s simply one of the many engineering changes that a product endures before the final version is realized.

Also the Original battery for the SDS100 was half the battery that we now have.
Buddy, I remember when Paul made the announcement about "the nip it in the bud" big butt battery replacement campaign in June of 2018, he made it a point to say that it didn't refer to you,.

It's funny what you remember, even though I can't find my keys in the morning...;)

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking about the concept of an "emergency radio bag," and I would prefer if everything had the option to run off AAs.
AA's don't last forever, that's why I have a USB battery pack, a 12V battery and Solar panel that can charge everything including the cellphone.
Being in Southern California you never know when the "Big One" is going to strike.

You'd really be better off just charging several of the USB portable battery banks like Citywide173 and Omega-Tl referenced and keeping spare USB cables in your radio bag.

These big USB battery packs are a dream to use for long listening. Have one for my 436. I tested mine and it ran for 24 hours with about 30% left. Its a little bulky but worth it. Am still hunting for a large enough case to hold both.
