Yesterday afternoon around 3:30, a very localized severe storm hit parts of South and Southwest Lexington, mainly along the Clays Mill Road areas north of New Circle. This gave me a chance to test my new PRO-106 on the Kentucky Utilities P-25 frequencies during the cleanup and power restoration, which went well into the early morning hours Saturday. This is important because for several years, I have hesitated buying a digital scanner due to the price and all the complaints I've seen about these scanners on Radio Reference..
While at the Dayton Hamvention last month, the Radio Shack folks had the Pro-106 handheld and its desktop brother on sale for only $349.... I decided to take the plunge and buy the 106. I am most pleased with its performance as I now can hear KSP and Kentucky Utilities crystal clear. Programming the scanner is a bit difficult to navigate at first, but after spending some time with the instruction manual and on-line "tips" on programming it, I am very pleased with the perfomance. I was able to program everything manually and may, at some point, look into doing it via computer. There are many features I have yet to figure out, but for now, KSP and KU come in fine. As with any new gear like this, I find it best to just learn one thing at a time and eventually it all starts to fall together.
Bottom line: If you have been sitting on the "Digital Sidelines" because you did not know what to buy, I can honesty say the Pro-106 is a decent scanner....
