Hi everyone, I've been trying to setup my HT to hopefully hear some communication on ISS but the information is confusing on which freq to listen on. My first attempt I setup my downlink side on 145.800 and tried several attempts but no luck. Then upon some other research I setup 5 entries with uplink freq at 145.990 and entered 5 downlink freq. at 437.790, 437.795, 437.800, 437.805, 437.810 and scanned through but not a peep. I set the CTSSS at 67.0Hz

I am using the Yaesu FT-70DR with a portable Arrow 2m/70cm antenna. I'm not sure on the difficulty level to actually capture some communication or are location is a key factor but any suggestions are welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

As of late, you will hear APRS packets on 145.825 MHz going through the ISS digipeater.

Check the ARISS website for current information. The APRS packet digipeater is operational on 145.825 as noted, they will switch the mode to voice at some point in the next few months. It is 145.990 up and 437.795 down, you have your downlink frequencies set correctly to compensate for Doppler. It’s very easy to hear, they run much higher power than any of the FM satellites.

You should be able to work SO-5O using the same technique with your Arrow. It’s reliable but very busy.

Thank you for confirming my settings, I am running GoISSWatch on IOS so it gives me the passing times and i think i need to figure squelch cause the air is so silent. Yes my settings are the new FM repeater system so I'm not giving up and I will try SO-50 I heard that's a good one to get started. Thank you all for all your comments and help. I have a few passes tomorrow but my opportunity will be 6pm tomorrow.

Set your squelch wide open. I took my Arrow and tripod out this morning for a pass listening with an old analog Bearcat scanner on 145.825. Heard it almost the entire pass. A tripod makes it a bit easier to manage.

Awesome thanks N4DJC. Onething I wanted to mention as a curiosity, I had been using GoISSWatch on IOS and one its features is the "Passes" and on it showed that several times a day ISS passed over my area but I think and correct me if I am wrong but I don't think that means I have several opportunites per day to listen and here is why. I proceeded to download the paid version of the app GoSatWatch so I can track multiple satellites, however going into it's features "Passes" it is indicating that only on April 24th is ISS available and then several times after, nothing before now and that date, so unsure of this discrepancy, users of this app may have some more information on this discovery.

I use ISS Tracker, I can set the azimuth at whatever minimum I want and have it notify me of any one of dozens of satellite passes. It's free but the paid upgrade is like $1.00 or so. I've used several but this is the easiest one for me. Outside of a real sat tracker that controls the radio and antenna it's been pretty handy for me.

I'm not familiar with GoISSWatch but many of the ISS apps show only "visible" passes at higher magnitudes (in order for you to see it well) unless you change the settings. They are designed for users that want to see the ISS in orbit rather than make contacts.

ISS Detector is the app I use, not ISS Tracker. I’ve used it for several years with good results.

is the app for when you can see it or hear it ?
you can hear it when you can't see it.

If you are an iOS user, GoSatWatch clearly shows when a satellite is either visible or in eclipse. It's very handy for things like showing the ISS to others of for using satellites like EO-88 where the transponder is only active in eclipse... it's nice to know when the transponder will enter sunlight and turn-off. Have fun :)

Did you find this?

ISS Frequencies

To listen only, you could also keep an eye on the upcoming school contacts for one over North America. The voice contacts usually boom in.

ISS Upcoming Educational Contacts
I am new to monitoring the ISS, I noticed this.....Would I need to Program the other freqs 10khz up and 10khz down from the original frequency?

  • Downlink 437.800MHz FM; Doppler +-10KHz
