BCD325P2/BCD996P2: Issues picking up local city

So I just got my BCD996P2 today, I used Proscan to import all the databases from Norfolk and Hampton but some reason I can only get Hampton and not Norfolk. Hampton seems to just use analog for fire but if I recall correctly I saw it pickup Hampton University Police which I think uses the P25 stuff (don’t know the exact term). My question is why would I not be able to pickup Norfolk Public Safety if I can get Hampton?

Could I just be over my head and it just being a reception issue or could the info from the database be wrong? I could bring my scanner to work with me as I work downtown to see if I pickup it up there but want to make sure all the info is right. I have a database file if anyone wants to take a peak.

Welcome to the RR forums. Are you monitoring from within Norfolk or no? Either way, where are you in relation to both towers on the simulcast? Also the system coverage map below is an approximation and doesn't factor in topography which may help or hinder reception. Also 800mhz doesn't propagate as far as VHF or UHF


With that said Simulcast distortion could be the issue if you're getting a link on the control channel but are hearing broken up or no transmissions at all. Feel free to try the mitigation methods in the hyperlink I provided but you may be better off with an SDS100 or SDS200

Also could be too far away from Norfolk. These systems don't really carry too much outside the city's jurisdiction

They have sites optimized to keep most of the RF within the city. That way the limited amount of frequencies can be reused more offen and don't have many interference issues with surrounding jurisdictions.

All public safety for Hampton Roads will be on one of local P25 Trunked Radio Systems.

Data in Radio Reference is correct as downloaded these systems in my G5 and work alright.

All fire for Hampton is on the linked system below.

Law enforcement are mostly full time encrypted, so you won't get much on that.

The only thing for analog on fire looks to the one frequency for dispatching incidents. All the stuff for the response will be on the P25 TRS.

Looks like a large majority of Norfolk is in the clear at this point according to the DB here.

I'm located in Ocean View. I haven't tweaked the P25 mode yet, by default is it set to Auto?

This-Hampton(VA) City Govt.

AND

This-Norfolk(VA) Public Safety

Even though the update was last year. While not being e/E, they are both Simulcast.

The 996p2 doesn't do well with Simulcast.

My question is why would I not be able to pickup Norfolk Public Safety if I can get Hampton?

So, I returned my 996P2 and got a SDS100 instead. So far, it's working great. Thanks for the help everyone!
