To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello guys,

I'm having issues programming Motorola CDM 1550 (I think the version is 1550 because the model is AAM25KKF9AA5AN).

I'm using a RIB box and official software but I cant connect to the radio.

I tested 3 different radios. I have no more radios to test.

Do you think I might have an issue with the RIB box? It turns on, the data led goes on/off, and the radio gets blocked while rib is connected. Despite being old, seems strange I can't connect to any of this radios.

What configs do you use on the COM port?

What cheap solution do you propose? Thanks

What software are you using and are you using a true serial cable with that rib or a serial to usb converter? And what are the specs on the computer you're using?

I'm using the CPS official software. I'm using a RIB with a homemade serial cable that connects to the radio. My colleagues said this used to work and I got the task to retest. We don't understand much about mobile radios. They complained that all this motorola radios stopped working regard being programmed and I find it strange.
You are asking my COM specs? Im using 9600, 8, none, 1, hardware on the COM specs, on a Windows XP machine.
You shouldn't need a RIB. CDM's program just fine with an FTDI USB programming cable.
My colleagues already had this system.

Is this a remote head setup?
I've occasionally had issues with CDM's in remote head configurations when trying to program via the mic jack.
Using the rear connector can address that.

I don't know if my version is the LS+ but my back/front config is like this. I don't use remote head setup but I'm using the mic jack to program via RIB box.

I've never programmed via the remote head, thought moto put some documentation out way back telling you specifically not to do that.

In my experience reading through the remote head always worked but writing usually caused EEPROM issues and required recovering the radio.

Depend which cable OP is using. There is a rib cable for cdm programing.

I think it would help if you told us exactly which cable you are using.
I also use a RIB with mine and a home made cable (not sure what happened to the CDM cable…) Other than the issue with the remote head setup, I've never had an issue.

Since you are not using the remote head, then that's not the issue, unless there's a problem with the flex cable behind the head, but that would likely impact the operation of the radio.

Copycat RIBS can sometimes be problematic. Cheap cables can be an issue. Make sure you are using a cable that is specifically designed for the CDM, and not some other type of radio. Motorola was good about making sure you needed a new cable every time you bought a new model.

If the RIB is an official Motorola RIB, make sure it either has a brand new 9 volt battery in it, or you are using the wall wart. A weak 9v battery will mess things up.
