What do Japan police, fire, etc use for their radio system? Are they digital? TETRA? Thanks for any information!

It all depends on what prefecture you are in. They have a lot of TETRA trunking systems in place for the police. This usually consists of a prefectural network, and there is another network that is nationally based. However, fire and EMS communications are still on VHF-High band in many areas. However, they plan on going digital in the future.

RX Frequency:271-275 MHz
Direct communication Frequency:262.0375-262.4375

Modulation scheme:π/4-shift QPSK
Communication method:TDMA
Voice Codec:AMBE+

Until all the systems digitize, Analog radio is also used together.
