Hey all, I am wanting to listen to the Johnston County Sheriff and Clayton PD. I heard Clayton PD is encrypted. Is this true? As I understand it, I should be able to pick up JCSO if I get a digital trunking scanner. Right now I just have an analog trunking one, Radio Shack Pro-94, and I can only get EMS and fire dispatch. I am also not hearing the OPS channels. Are those digital as well? Thanks for the info.

Welcome to RR.com core21.
Good to have you with us.
Don't get encryption confused with Johnston Counties use of Provoice. They are not one and the same. Johnston County is not encrypted, they just use a proprietary type of radio system that scanners can't decode. It is a small but important difference.
Even if you were to purchase a digital scanner you will still be in the same spot of being able to only monitor FD & EMS Dispatch and not the OPS talkgroups nor any of the talkgroups in Provoice mode.

I see. Well that is too bad. I appreciate the information, Marshall.

I wish I could have been the bearer of better news :)
Heck, I have one of each of the top of the line radios and I am
stuck in the same boat as everyone else.
Heck even Wake County FDs like Garner have to have a full time patch
setup between VIPER and Johnston's system so the Wake Co units can talk
to the Johnston County Units.
Such is life.
Happy Monitoring

Same with us. We can't hear them at all but they have been good about giving out bolo's out on VIPER JC LAW now. Thank God for that talkgroup or we'd be calling them on the phone when needing information from them. All of their officers have it in their radios now which has been a big help in the past, on manhunts etc.
