I am very new to the idea of diy antennas, so please be nice if this idea is completely dumb.
I was trying to figure out how to make or buy as simple an antenna as possible (push back from partner/hoa same old story)
Obviously I know I can purchase something and mount it to the side of the deck....but I was looking around and wondered.

We have a weather station mounted on a galvanized steel pole. It is mounted to the side of a pergola, then its grounded with a copper cable/rod right below it.

I was wondering if it would be possible to use this mast in any way to diy a jpole? Not sure if it's even remotely possible but wanted input.
I do realize there are many factors that make this a strange idea, but thought....maybe? :)

Here are the stats:
10ft galvanized steel pipe 1.5" diameter, mounted by metal brackets at two points to wood support, grounded directly below.
Length of pipe above the second bracket is 83 3/4" (bottom to second bracket 36 1/4")
Oh this would be for RX only, not transmitting at all.

Gonna attach two pictures of it.

Thank you for your input and for being nice to such a newbie as me!

10 ft of mast (and adding a 2nd mast for the "shorter" section of the j-pole) is going to be resonant around 70 mHz. Not where you want it for scanner listening. And more importantly, j-poles have very narrow frequency coverage... not suitable for normal general purpose scanning when you wish to listen to services over a wide range of frequencies. But here is something different to consider: Can you move the weather station down the mast a few feet and put a wideband scanner antenna on top of the mast? A discone would work and is very wideband but will draw HOA attention. Much less obtrusive and more aesthetically pleasing would be an OmniX mounted on top of the mast -

Lots of reviews for the OmniX here on RR... use "Search".

That's kind of what I was afraid of. As far as putting an antenna on top the mount of the weather sensor won't allow it to be moved lower. I brought up that idea and was vetoed anyway. Well dang it haha

You can easily make a stand off bracket to mount your antenna. Home Depot sells short lengths of Uni-Strut in the electrical section. Get a two pieces about 18" long and some pipe clamps for it that'll match your existing mast. Use another short length of pipe and suitable size clamps to attach a stand off vertical section. Mount your antenna on that.
