Hi, I used to watch the takeoffs and landings with my father at Municipal Airport in downtown KC. It was some of the greatest thrills as a young kid being up so close. I would love to relive some of that and pass it on to my son. Does anyone know of allowed viewing spots for takeoffs/landing for Downtown or KCI airports?

Thanks for your time!

At the Downtown Airport, your best bets are on the North side along Richards Rd (the one that parallels 169 Highway) or the Airline Museum parking lot on the West side of the airport. Security at Downtown is fairly laid back, so no one should bother you.

At KCI, things are a bit more tricky. Here's a good reference for plane spotting there: Bruce's Planespotting Guide - Kansas City Int'l Airport (MCI). If you do decide to sit at the dead end portion of Mexico City Ave (near I-29), be prepared to have Airport PD or the Platte County Sheriff's Office swing by and tell you to take a hike.

I have spent many of lunch's on the south side of runway 1/19 in the gravel parking lot, It gives you a great view down the runway. The only problem I ever had was when President Bush was in town and parked down there, KCPD suggested I move on after a quick check.

I have also observed from the parking lot by Beechcraft , Many bicyclist park there and ride around the airport.
