• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just got a bunch of radios thats I am trying to program. However I am unable to read or write to the radios. When hitting read or write using KPGD3 software the radio switches from unprogram to program but then after a while of doing nothing the software says failed to communicate.
Am i missing anything? Is there anything special with the cable?

thanks

What's the software version?
What is the radio firmware version?
Which cable are you using?
Same with all the radios?

If everything is working right, it should just work. There isn't anything special you need to do.

Hiya software version is 3.00 and release 6/27/2019
Firmware is 3.52.00

cable is kpg-46 same as I have used on nx-800

thanks

I'd have to do some digging, maybe @kd4efm can confirm, but there was a big change in the software/firmware mix that had a requirement to update your software if using something above a 3.4x version firmware.

In other words, you need to update your KPG-D3N to make this work.

Cutoff seems to be the 3.2 version. Since your radios are newer, upgrading software should fix this.

Contact your Kenwood dealer for the updated KPG-D3N software.

@kd4efm, can you confirm I'm on the right track here?

So I have several 3720's with version 3.5 firmware (I believe it's a few versions behind). The Software is KPG-D3N v. 3.30 (It says released in 2020 but I bought it recently so I believe it's current). I've never had any issues, and I mess with the programming frequently.

Thanks, that matches up with the 3.20 thing I recall. I found some documentation on it, and it confirms, but just wanted to double check with Evans since he's the expert on this stuff.

Radio firmware 3.20 & older can only be programmed by KPG-D3N ver 3.20 or older.. Once you upgrade KPG-D3N to Ver 3.30 or greater you loose the ability to program the older radios unless you update the firmware. You can only install one version of the software on your PC with the license key. in short there is brick wall at 3.30 that separates the versions.

If your trying to use KAS-10 with the NX-3820 you need to modify the 0 ohm chip resistors on the main board for serial comms via the rear DB15 port. These are 0602 chip resistors so a microscope is recommended otherwise you will go insane!!

Then you have to set one of the radios comm port for serial data, I do not recall what the exact options are.
