Ok, perhaps this isn't the proper section, but I'll have at it anyway. I just recently purchased the Kenwood TH-K2AT. So far I like it. However, after I enter the CTCSS codes and lock them in, they reset after I turn the radio off. I looked through the manual and didn't see this. Does anyone have experience with this particular radio or does anyone know how to eliminate the codes being reset once the unit is shut off. Thanks.

Don't have one, but you might need to write all the info for a CH position into the VFO, then write that from the VFO into a memory position.

Grog, all I heard was "blah, blah, blah." And absolutely no offense to you. This is ALL new stuff to me so I have NO idea what you said. I'll have to do some digging on what you said and give it a go. Thanks for the info.

Well I assumed since you are operating a ham radio, that you were a ham. Being a ham would hopefully mean that you knew what a VFO is.

Anyway, read the manual and come back after that's done. What I described was not complicated at all.

Actually, you were half right. It is used for public safety, but will be HAM as soon as I get my Tech license.

Moved to the "All Others" forum.

Thanks for moving it to where it belonged.

This should be a standard answer by now, but lets assume you mean you use it to RX public safety. If you used it to talk on any frequency besides ham freqs (which you can't do without a license either) then you are violating FCC regulations. Your radio is only type-accepted for transmitting between 144 & 148mhz, nothing else.

This does not matter if you have a license to use any such frequency, even if you are the chief of police.

Ok...I own the th-k2at and...
1. It does sound (as said above) like you have not actually entered the frequency in memory..the th-k2at is one of the easiest handhelds to program that I have ever owned and I have owned many since I became a ham about 14 years ago...as much as we hate it, read the manual from cover to cover...This is one of the best radios for someone new to the hobby since it is so simple and it is great for us old timers as a simple carry round radio since we don't always need all the bells and whistles and this radio does what it is supposed to...receives and transmits very well..

2. Spend a few bucks and either make or buy the computer control cable...the Kenwood software for this radio is free..not the greatest but it does work and will save time...HOWEVER, do take the time as I stated above and learn how to program....when you get your license, you need to know how to enter a quick repeater freq along with tone/ctcss when you do not have the software at hand.

3. As Grog said very clearly above I assume you mean listen on the non-ham frequencies and not transmit...the radio is not approved for transmitting outside 2 meters as said previously. It is a very fine and sensitive receiver for all freqs in vhf hi.

4. Best of luck on the license!...it is not hard and well worth it...

I was missing a step. The page w/ the instructions wasn't printed clearly. I downloaded the instructions from Kenwood and got everything straightened out. All Rx/Tx/CTCSS are stored fine. Thanks for all of the replies.
