I have a kenwood TK-3101 radio, actualy I have 2 of them, but only one of them is having problems, It will not transmit, well if you tap something verry loudly over the mic, you can hear a faint noise on the other radio, but thats it, you can't hear anyone speaking. I have hooked an external speaker mic up to it, and that didn't fix it, it still did the same thing, I received the radio in this condition, and have no clue why it's doing this (I am also fairly new to this), I have the cable to progamm the frequencies, and have verrified that it is programmed with the correct frequencies. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Not to sound flip, but it the radio is broken. Sounds as if it needs service.

My problem?

He came on here looking for help to repair it himself. He obviously knows he could take it to a Kenwood dealer for repair, but the idea in even asking on here to begin with are to get suggestions how to do the work himself.

It pisses me off to no end when people state the obvious like "It's broken, take it to the shop", when that's exactly what he's trying to avoid.

Unless you are real good at working with surface mounted parts, you will be much better off taking to to a Kenwood shop. Those portable radios with their surfaced mounted parts are realy hard to both remove and reinstall if you do not have the corret soldering equipment!!

Again you would be better off taking it to a service shop.

Are you capable of holding a conversation without using some type of vulgarism? It would appear you cannot comment in this thread without doing so.

Pardon my ignorance, stupidity, illiteracy or whatever. Umm...would you please quote the part of his message where he says he wants to do the repair himself? Or even the part where he says he is avoiding wanting to get it repaired in a shop.

Or maybe you are clairvoyant? You certainly read more than I do into the original posting. BTW did you notice that I let it alone for almost a whole day before making my comment?

Well, let's see. If he wanted to take it to a radio shop, he'd open up the phone book and look for a Kenwood dealer. He's a friend of mine, so I know he's definatly smart enough to figure out how to get "professional" help, should he choose to.

That being said, surface mount stuff isn't really that big of a deal. I used to do chip level soldering, which is 10 times smaller (at least) than regular SMD soldering, so that's not an issue.

But I digress, you don't seem to get my point.

The only point I get is that you still haven't shown me how I am supposed to know he was looking for help on repairs instead of advice. Since he is a friend of yours, and you are such a fan of commercial equipment, why don't you go help him out instead of wasting our time here. :?

I see I won't be getting any help here. I am new to radios but have been working with circuitry for a while now, I asked a simple question, at least I thought it was. I just wanted to know what was wrong with it, not whether I should take it to a radio repair shop or not. Myself not knowing anything about radios could have told anyone that. I just wanted to see if anyone knew what could be wrong with it, so I could attempt to fix it. but from seeing peoples posts on here, it seams like you can talk the talk but when it comes down to it you can not walk the walk. Great for radio frequencies, not for hardware problems.

Conudrum, If you received these radios as the original owner they should be able to be fixed under warranty. If not then the best way to have it serviced is to send it in under factory warranty.

As a Kenwood LMR dealer even our shop will send in some of warenty radios to be fixed because of the surface mounted and "small parts" issues that develope with those products.

Portable radios, and with the "down-sized" stuff really makes it hard for someone , even for those that work with "all the time"!!

You probably have a problem that will be more than a just change out a part kind of problem.

Good luck in getting your problem fixed.
