• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just received a Kenwood TK-7160H and a Kenwood TK-7360HV and am looking for help programming these radios to monitor analog conventional systems in my area for work.

What softwares do I need for these radios and what cables do I need? Also where can I purchase what I need? I've programmed TYT and Baofeng radios for monitor-only, but this will be my first time for Kenwood so I am not sure if it is the same or not for these commercial radios.

Thank you for your help.

For the TK-7360, KPG-135DN, latest version is V2.21 for US/Canada market radios.
As daniel said, KPG-99D is the software for the TK-7160 US/Canada market radios.

If your radios are from "somewhere else", you'll need to track down the correct software for the region.

The only legal place to get the software is from a Kenwood dealer. Software is copyrighted. The KPG-99D is no longer available on the dealer tools page, it's too old. KPG-135DN is still available.
But with careful searching, you can often find it from "other" sources. You not only need the programming software, but you'll need an activation key for the software, so if you go fishing around on E-bay, make sure it includes the activation key.

As for the programming cable...
KPG-46A is the RS-232 DB-9 cable that connects to the mic jack for programming. KPG-46 is the RS-232 DB-25 cable. You'd probably find that the KPG-46U USB cable will work, but I don't have a 7160 here in front of me to confirm that. For the 7360, Kenwood says the KPG-46 cable with the KCT-53U USB adapter will do the trick. You can experiment with other USB - RS232 adapters.

Some of the after market cables are OK, some are pure junk. Kawamall on e-Bay tends to have good stuff and good reviews. Avoid the overly inexpensive stuff.

This is the cable I have.
I have an aftermarket USB to DB9 usb adapter, then a DB9 to DB25 serial cable then the KPG-46 with a 6 pin RJ12 crimped on the end.

I confirm this setup works on TK-7160, TK-7180, TK-7360, TK-760G radio's. If I ditch the USB to serial adapter, and change to an old DOS computer, it works on the older TK-760/762 (non G) radios.
