I have a dual band single head setup with a 790/890. Everything works great on the VHF side however I cannot receive on the UHF channels unless I put it into monitor. I know the PLs are correct and I have adjusted the open and tight squelch settings as discussed on these forums any thing else that I can do without test equipment? Is there anything that a Kenwood dealer can do? Or is the radio likely too old to be fixed. Is there a way to force it back to wideband?

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The TK-x90 mobiles are still in production, can be repaired and parts are still available. A Kenwood dealer should be able to look at it for you, however be aware that bench time is usually around $85/hr. So, it may be worth looking at finding a used one if you expect the cost of repair to be high.
You can purchase a "W-license" from Kenwood to re-enable wide band use on these radios.
I'm not familiar with the issue you are having with this specific radio, so I'm not sure what the issue is. If you started having issues with PL tones after switching to narrow band, then it's likely it's out of adjustment. It's not something you should attempt unless you have the correct test equipment.
Since there are a lot of these radios out in the field, you should have no issue finding a good used one, or at least finding someone to repair it for you. You'd need a service monitor and the programming software to do this.
